Road Trip: Myrtle Beach ~ A Big Hit
The Golf Channel and Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday created the golf travel reality show "Road Trip: Myrtle Beach"
"Road Trip: Myrtle Beach" is a golf travel show depicting a foursome's daily activities during a golf vacation on the Grand Strand. The cast consists of ESPN commentator and former PGA Tour golfer Charlie Rymer, who narrates the show, singer/songwriter Josh Kelley, Hootie & the Blowfish guitarist Mark Bryan, and Duramed Futures Tour pro Perry Swenson.
Episodes generally include several holes of golf, lighthearted banter and competition on the course, dinners in restaurants, a taste of area nightlife, and music.
The first four episodes of the half-hour show initially aired on the network at 7:30 p.m. on successive Tuesdays in February and easily surpassed ratings from that same time slot in 2007, according to Golf Channel managing director of public relations Dan Higgins.
The show, which has eight more episodes in 2008, is tied to an advertising and promotional package with Golf Channel according to Bill Golden, Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday's vice president and marketing director.
"We're very pleased with the results," Golden said. "We think we created a show that successfully engaged the Golf Channel viewer. I think it shows we were able to create a show to depict what Myrtle Beach is all about. ... The visuals highlight the beauty of the area."
The first four shows featured courses and businesses on the South Strand. Future shows will be moved around the beach. The next four episodes will be shot around the April 14 Hootie & the Blowfish Monday After the Masters Celebrity Pro-Am at Barefoot Resort, which the entire cast will take part in.
Those episodes are slated to air beginning in June, and one will be shot at the event. The four remaining episodes are expected to be filmed in May and air beginning in August.
"Now with the four done, we have a better sense of what we want to do moving forward," Golden said.
