Oyster Bay Golf Links

Oyster Bay Golf Links was the first course to open just across the state line in Brunswick County, North Carolina, and there could have hardly been a better introduction for visiting golfers.

Architect Dan Maples enjoyed the benefit of a beautiful piece of coastal property, and took full advantage of the gift, carving a memorable course through a maritime forest and the marshy waters of the Calabash River.

Oyster Bay, which was named “Best New Resort Course” by Golf Digest upon its 1983 opening and has been ranked among America’s top 50 public layouts, is at its best on the closing four holes. The 15th and 17th are both island green par 3s that are the layout’s most photographed holes.

The 17th green is ringed by the facility’s trademarked oyster shells, enhancing the hole’s visual appeal. Not to be outdone, the par 4 16th, which plays 450 yards from the blue tees (6,325 yards) and requires a forced carry to the green, is the hardest hole on the course.

Oyster Bay is among the Myrtle Beach area’s upper tier courses and certainly worth a visit. The combination of a natural beauty and a stern test golf have made Oyster Bay, a par 70, one of the area’s best and most popular courses.

We were able to book 3 foursomes together. The course was in great shape. Greens putted true. The staff is very friendly here, right from bag drop to starter. The clubhouse was great. We had the buffet breakfast and lunch of menu, all wonderful. Our waitress, Beth was fantastic. Definitely a must play.

Oyster Bay has always been one of my favorite courses, but I have to say this time I was very disappointed. From the 1st hole, the group in front of us was very slow. We had to wait 3-5 minutes before each shot. They were soon at least 2 holes behind the group in front of them and when we called the pro shop, they sent someone out who said that there wasn't anything he could do about it. Our round was almost 5 1/2 hours long. It ruined the round for all of us, and I will not be booking them on future trips.

Played it in the morning. Got rained on for 3 holes, but then it cleared up. This course was the worse conditioned of the 7 we played on this trip. It is looking old & tired. Greens were like putting on Velcro, but with the tough sloping on the greens they could be unputtable if they allowed them to get too fast. Very short par 3s, shortish par 5s, but very long par 4s. It was a layout our group did not like. Between the conditions & the layout, we likely will not drive that far to play it again. Ate in the grill. Food was decent. Waitress had no sense of humour, and service was just acceptable. Nothing special there either.

Greens were very inconsistent. Fairways were thin in many areas. Pace of play was terrible. 6 Hours with plenty of rangers on course but did nothing to speed up play.

Great layout and fun to play but the course is getting a little tired. Should change golf carts to quads as the paths are in may also get ready for a 5 hour + round as they double tee.

Could be better marked between holes. Greens need work.

Course looks "tired" and in need of investment (cart paths, sand traps). You can tell Oyster Bay plays the numbers game, electing volume of golfers vs course experience. Marshalls can be rude and overly focused on pace of play as a result of pressing too many golfers into a days play. Great layout and views are wasted by a staff that's rooted in a culture "get them in, get them off and get them out"

Greens were the best and we played all week. Front nine fairways was getting punched. Overall very good Round. We will be back.

Finally! It has taken our group forever to return but we are glad we did. Awesome experience. The course was in fantastic shape. Great variety of holes.
