Opening in 1983, course designer Dan Maples built this magnificent golf course in Sunset Beach, N.C. which offers a combination of natural terrain and ingenious design to Bay present golfers with a true test of golf on a beautiful setting. This course features two island greens and other risk-reward opportunities that require a steady hand and rugged nerves. All handicaps are in for a treat on this links-style course that’s as lovely as it is challenging.
Receiving recognition from Golf Digest as “Best Places to Play” in 2005 and “5 Stars” in 2003, this will be worth the extra mile. The signature hole will be the 17th, at only 165 yards from the back tees, features a tiny green enclosed by trees and lined by the course’s trademark oyster shells. Another recognized hole is the 9th, a monster par 5, playing at 560 yards, with the marshy waters of the Calabash River running from tee to green on the left and out of bounds on the right, it presents a daunting challenge. Not to mention the green is only 29 yards deep and 25 yards wide. Head Pro, Tim Jackson, says to “play it cautious” and claims “it’s an outstanding par 5.”

Very good course. Back 9 is a bit more dificualt as we played it first and were 5 to 20 shots lower on the front 9. POP was 5 hours.

This is an old course and needs maintenance upgrades.

We were not made aware that overseeding had occurred. We still would have played, but it would have been nice to know about the over seeding.

I also enjoyed Oyster Bay as well. I was however disappointed in the pro shop because my grandson who is in the Air Force came to play with us and there was no Military discount, paid 86 dollars for him to play with us.

Great course, a lot of history here. The staff treated us very well and seemed happy we were there. They had a full house the day we played but pace of play was excellent. Many unique holes and tight fairways. Course is challenging but fair. Looking forward to playing it again.
