Opening in 1983, course designer Dan Maples built this magnificent golf course in Sunset Beach, N.C. which offers a combination of natural terrain and ingenious design to Bay present golfers with a true test of golf on a beautiful setting. This course features two island greens and other risk-reward opportunities that require a steady hand and rugged nerves. All handicaps are in for a treat on this links-style course that’s as lovely as it is challenging.

Receiving recognition from Golf Digest as “Best Places to Play” in 2005 and “5 Stars” in 2003, this will be worth the extra mile. The signature hole will be the 17th, at only 165 yards from the back tees, features a tiny green enclosed by trees and lined by the course’s trademark oyster shells. Another recognized hole is the 9th, a monster par 5, playing at 560 yards, with the marshy waters of the Calabash River running from tee to green on the left and out of bounds on the right, it presents a daunting challenge. Not to mention the green is only 29 yards deep and 25 yards wide. Head Pro, Tim Jackson, says to “play it cautious” and claims “it’s an outstanding par 5.”

Yardage book with all 5 Legends courses was provided. Tees fair, bunkers mostly good, A few greens had large bad spots and some greens had bad spots around the edges, usually on greens in the trees. OB needs trees trimmed/removed and new/repaired cart paths. The tifeagle greens were good were they had full coverage. At a par of 70 and with some short holes, OB plays like a longer course than it's yardage indicates, so don't be too quick to play the blue tees, unless you are under a 5 handicap and/or drive it 250+, as the longer holes are brutal from the blue tees, the short holes have lots of water, the greens are very undulating and the bunkers are deep. The 6325 blue tees have 7-8 brutal holes. The white tee yardage of 5575 looks short on the card, but trust me it’s still plenty challenging from there. The short holes can be birdied, but are also easily doubled. Each tee plays like a course about 400 yards longer, if 2 holes were extended to make it a par 72. ... Read More

That so many package groups going off - made for very slow play in addition to 20 min delay starting - had to quit after 12 holes after 4 hrs - 2 groups backed up on tee ahead and we had reservations - only complaint was women's tees were often in middle of fairway - otherwise course was in good condition and fair - deep sandtraps with heavy sand made for interesting bunker shots - was playing usual bogey golf game with couple pars and occasional chance for birdie thrown in - 15 with surrounding rises was beautiful hole ... With the options off the tee, Love is fun to play. There are fake ruins between holes 4 + 6. The main ruins hole (##4) is drivable, but plays longer than it looks. The course was in great condition everywhere. The bent greens are great, smooth, firm, fast and true. Champions greens are coming this summer. The bunkers are the best maintained in MB, with tour style firm sand to walk on, but a SW cuts right through it. They also pack/roll the sand on the faces, which help prevent plugged balls and washouts. The white tees are 6175 yards, but a bunch of holes have landing areas into an upslope, so it plays longer. The greens are elevated, so there are no bounce ups, unless you hit a skull/stinger. The wooded areas are cleaned out, so finding balls in the woods is easy, helping the pace of play. A few holes have houses, but they are way off the fairways. On Waterloo par 5 ##13, I feel it's better to hit your tee shot further down the fairway, for a better angle across the water to advance further up the fairway, rather than taking an iron and trying to play near the water from the tee. The bunkers were well groomed. The fairways were good. The mini-verde greens were very fast and slick, needing more filling in, for a truer roll. From around 3-9 hdc, the 6393 yard Blue tees play nicely at TPC, because you get a wide variety of shots from the tees and into the greens. The white tees are not a pushover to shoot your handicap. There are 3 forced carries from the tee, that will help confirm if you are playing the proper tees. TPC is challenging, but still fair. It plays harder than it looks, mainly due to the green complexes, where most of the greens require accurate approach shots. It is a difficult course to get up and down, if you are missing greens to the sides or long. TPC of MB is more wooded than other TPCs we see on TV. It looks flat and ordinary as you pass it to the pro shop, but don't be fooled! It is a complete gem in the rough and it is not rough where it counts. We were blown away by the $29 green fee with cart. The live oaks around the clubhouse/pro shop and down Number 1 are spectacular and that hole is tough with a water carry. Men's tees play from 7000/6500/6000 yards and it makes a difference. Holes 2-5 are ordinary but a challenge. At Hole 6, the course starts to show you how good it really is! The back 9 is FANTASTIC with only one short par 3 in the ordinary category. Number 18 is the most beautiful finishing hole I have played in 30 years of golfing. The greens, fairways, and tee boxes are in great shape. The rough is scabby and rough, but very playable. Sure, the cart paths are broken, so if you are a snob, stay away and miss out! Beautiful clubhouse with a great guy bartender/cook named Tony. Pours a heavy handed mixed drink for $3.50! An ideal golf day would be a morning round here from the back tees followed by lunch/drinks, with an afternoon round from the whites, completed by blotto drinks at the bar! The new in 2011 mini-verde greens were smooth, fast and perfect. This course is fun to play if you play the 6026 white tees. There is plenty of room to drive the ball on most holes and there is no housing on Avocet. The 6614 Magenta tees amp up the challenge a lot. Avocet single tees, so you don't have to worry about a double tee, can get a 9:30-12:00 tee time and not have to worry about the PM crossover delaying a replay. The flagsticks are orange for front, white for middle and black stripe for back. The old style bermuda greens were overseeded and mowed down with good speed, as one of the best old bermuda greens in MB. The greens were firm, fast and putted true, like the new hybrids. The roughs are also overseeded here, so if you like all green in the winter and early spring, consider the 3 Mystical courses. The Witch is tree lined, no housing, just Hwy 544 along ##11. Most of the woods are a wetlands, but few hazard stakes remain from years ago, so if you have a tournament, the spooky woods should be played as a hazard for your group. If you like lots of trees, without housing or parallel holes, you should like The Witch. It's not full of flowers or a modern clubhouse, but it's usually well maintained. This is a course where it is best to start on ##10, since it's next to the range and putting green, is easier than the front nine and ##9 is a good finishing hole. On hole ##9, drive it about 250 (out near the bunker) from the white tee, to reach the corner and avoid a surprise tree problem on the left.
