Possum Trot Golf Club

Golf Digest’s Most Underrated Golf Course in Myrtle Beach for 2005 has also drawn rave reviews for its practice facility. Given that Possom Trot Golf Club is meant as a bit of a warm-up course, the two honors seem to go hand-in-hand.

The 6,343-yard extremely clean design is often considered one of the friendliest around South Carolina’s Grand Strand. Playability is then further magnified by a lack of homes on and around the North Myrtle Beach property.

“We’ve always tried to treat them well and we’ve kept the course in good shape,” head professional Bill Hulett said of the attraction Possum Trot. “It’s a nice course without a lot of houses on it. Yet, it doesn’t beat you up.”

Many of the holes here are straightforward or as close to that as possible. Where Possum Trot can add a couple extra strokes to the scorecard is on its uphill holes (Nos. 9 and 11, for instance), not to mention some conspicuously placed water.

That goes for No. 13, maybe more than anywhere else. The par 3 plays a maximum of 203 yards, but a lake separating tee from TifDwarf green makes the four backside bunkers seem like a relief.

As a golf director I try to play a different course each week. Possum Trot overall in excellent shape from bag drop to beverage wagon. All staff 5 stars
by Ted - 02/24/2017
Great Old Style Golf Course. Everything is right out in front of you. Overall conditions were good. Some fairways a little thin & some greens bumpy but putted true. This course gets so much play so I am not complaining. Very friendly staff & pace of play was 4 hours on a very busy day.
by Ted - 09/07/2016
Greens - Good Shape: Tee Boxes - Lots of bare spots: Fairways very narrow due to using this course in the World Am: Staff - Always very nice:
by Ted - 04/26/2016
Older Golf Course but a fun place to play. Pro Shop & Bag Drop People very friendly. Tee's,Fairways & Greens are in very good shape. Pace of play started a little slow but the rangers got the slower groups moving & we finished in just over 4 hours.
by Chip (Midlothian, VA) - 04/15/2016
4/14/16 The course was in great condition. We played as a twosome and played in 4:15. Moved along nicely.
by Tom (Glen Burnie, MD) - 12/02/2015
Attendants were nice and polite. Start times were on time. Course was in good shape for prior conditions. Enjoy the round of golf. Thanks.
by Dan C - 09/14/2015
Was there last week. Due to the 2 weeks of rain before our arrival it was hard to judge the course. The staff were great and the look of the fairways and greens that could be seen under the water look good. They allow our wife's to ride with us at NO COST The only negative thing was that the cart paths need a fair bit of work due to pot holes.
by Tom baker - 08/09/2015
Really enjoyed this course. Wide fairways and good of the strangest things I've ever seen on a golf course was this male golfer who was walking the course had 15 dogs walking with him. When he put down his bag to putt the dogs all laid down and waited for him. Once he was done putting off they went VERY well behaved.the course was in very good shape. From the tips (blue tees) it played long. I would highly recommend this course
by Joshua (Delran, NJ) - 07/15/2015
Pace of play was extremely slow.
by Edward - 06/23/2015

Greens were terrible!!! Very disappointed with the course period!! Drove a hour just to play and ended up with a very bad choice.
by Elmer - 05/26/2015
I called the pro shop to see if I could walk the course. I was told I could. After getting there, and paying a young incompetent man behind the desk I went to the driving range. The individual in charge wasn't there, and had a sign up that said Be Back In 2 Minutes. I waited 15 minutes! It was a elderly gentleman, and he didn't apologize for my wait. Afterwards, I hit my range balls, and then went to tee-off at hole number 1. Upon my way there the starter said where is your partner? I said, I am a single, and I paid to walk! He said, Singles can't walk, and play until the afternoon. He also didn't have my name on his list. I showed him my receipt. He went inside, and another individual came outside, and said I was good to go. I said, Well since I was charged for a cart I am taking one. He said, I completely understand, it's all just a misunderstanding. I then continued to play golf. Through 14 holes I had a 10 minute wait time at each tee-box. Also, after paying $50 dollars I was very unhappy because the course was in terrible condition! Four of the greens where burned up. After playing multiple courses in Myrtle Beach I have came to one conclusion! Golf is ridiculously expensive, and decent course is going to cost you $65 plus dollars!!! A good course $80+++!!!!! In Tennessee this course would be a $25 dollar course!!! Possibly not worth that much!

Course was in good shape, not great. Greens had just been punched, but still rolled well. Fairways were in good shape. Nice layout. I would rate the course as a 7.5. Would rate it a little higher if the grill was better. Only cold sandwiches and hot dogs. Nice middle of the road course for warm up. I have played it before because it is very close to where I was staying. Staff was very nice.
by Gary (Oro-Medonte, ON) - 04/20/2015
The friendly staff, good course conditions, well paced round, and the lovely natural setting with mature tree lined fairways and interesting layout, made for a very enjoyable round.
by Mark - 03/16/2015
The course was fine but I had the unhappy problem of losing my cell phone there. When a young lady at the desk went out to check with the cart crew she was loudly criticized by another man at the desk, saying That's not her job! I left a number to reach me at the desk with the helpful young lady, as she did not find it ... luckily the phone was found by an honest man within 24 hours. But when he attempted to turn it in he was told at the desk to just take it and sell it!!! This kind man was able to contact another member of my group through my contact list and I got the phone back. He even refused my offer of cash for his trouble. Given my experience of the previous day there is no reason to doubt his description of events, I found the attitude of some of the staff to be simply stunning.
by John (Conway, SC) - 03/06/2015
Cart path only (the day we played).
by Ansil (Knoxville, TN) - 01/06/2015
Course was great, pro shop was rude on arrival.
by Johnny (Yorktown, VA) - 12/03/2014
The friendly, professional staff welcomed my wife and me and we will play here again on our next trip to Myrtle Beach.

by John (Cranston, RI) - 09/15/2014
There was a lot of standing water on the course.

I was disappointed in the rating system used. We played 3 courses, Possum Trot was rated the highest! By far, Possum Trot was in the worse condition of all 3 courses. Please do something about this as people new to Myrtle Beach rely on this information to make choices.
by Alec (Pittsburgh, PA) - 08/14/2013
Perfect greens.
by Miguel (Charlotte, NC) - 08/01/2013
I liked the course. It was tended fairly well. It was also a bit challenging in layout.
by Stanford (Timberlake, NC) - 07/18/2013
I've always liked Possum Trot. Was really wet and could not ride the fairways and make play slow, but I can't fault the course for that. Enjoyed the course.
by Sande (Stevensville, MD) - 05/02/2013
Loved it!
by Clay (Kansas, OH) - 04/29/2013
We play possum trot every year. The things that bring us back would be: 1. Southern hospitality, 2. Course layout, 3. Greens/fairways
by Joshua - 03/04/2013
The layout is great for anyone. Extremely wide fairways. Layout a solid 9. Overseeding did not take great on fairways and greens but played in March so it was expected. Solid recommendation definitely would play again.
by Brian (Beaconsfield,QC) - 10/30/2012
by Gordon (Charlotte, NC) - 10/13/2012
Course was fair for my type of game.
by Gary (Rutledge, PA) - 10/10/2012
by Walter (Maple, ON) - 10/03/2012
Always play there. Very forgiving. Damn moles. Some of the fairway grass is not condusive to taking a divot - ball sits too high.
by Kenneth (Clayton, NC) - 09/25/2012
Nice course with alot of trees and shade. Greens a little slow but consistent. Would definitely play again.
by Joe () - 09/02/2012
We play this course every year during our vacation and that's because it's a great course. However, it would have been good to know how wet the course was and that the grass on the fairways had not been cut in a week.
by Scott (Valley City, OH) - 07/23/2012
Nice layout. Greens should have not had been fertilized just before we went out - 7:00 a.m.
by John (Dumfries, VA) - 06/29/2012
by Ian - 05/02/2012
Played the course on 13/04. Had a great time on a well groomed layout.
by Barron (Silver Spring, Md.) - 04/20/2012
Excellent experience.
by Walt - 04/18/2012
Very nice course to play, once you get past the rudeness of the staff. It's as though they didn't want us, or our money there. The folks who work there need to learn some people skills. They're very unpleasant.
by Rob (Eden Prairie, Minn.) - 04/05/2012
Played back tees and enjoyed the course. Only one tee shot felt was unfair from back tees. Can't remember hole for sure but there was no clear view of green from the tee. Tees were a little hairy and not very flat but OK. Overall would give it a 7. Thanks.
by Darren - 04/03/2012
Played it (Monday, April 2, 2012). Good practice area, but it was very busy. May be the busiest practice area on the Strand I was told. Course was a pleasant surprise. Greens were very full, a decent speed & overall receptive (a couple seemed a little firmer than others). Fairways were in great shape, very light rough. Tees were a little long, but not bad really. Course is a fair test of golf, that should not beat up the average golfer. The Par 5, #18 is a great finishing hole. The grill is very basic, cart service was good. For the $$$ a good value, & I will likely be back.
by Mark (Paoli, Penn.) - 03/15/2012
Not as nice as Shaftesbury but excellent value.
by DJ - 11/25/2011
Just a nice little golf course, this will be our starting course next year. Fastest round of the week (just under 4 hours).
by Bob - 10/24/2011
Played Possum Trot on the 22nd and had a great time. The course was a little wet but in good shape. Will play again.
by Bob - 10/23/2011
Course was in very good condition. Will play again before I leave the beach.
by Jerome (Oakdale, Penn.) - 10/17/2011
From starter to the 18th hole our group had a lot of fun. This is the second time we played this course and would play it again.
by George (Brantford, Ontario) - 10/11/2011
In general, course conditions were good. More work is required on maintenance of the bunkers.
by John (Huntsville, Ala.) - 07/06/2011
Friendly staff/course was fun/accommodating for members in my party who are not regular golfers. Not sure what Handicap Score is supposed to be. My index is 14.7 for private course.
by Robert (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J.) - 06/01/2011
Course was just aerated ... (would like to have known prior to play the) maintenance schedule for greens.
by Morgan (Charlotte, N.C.) - 05/30/2011
Great value. Superb course conditions. Friendly staff. One of my favorite courses.
by Rich - 05/16/2011
It's golf, but just barely. OK for taking the kids for a round of fun. But if you are serious about your golf, don't waste your time or your money.
by Douglas (Van Nuys, Calif.) - 05/10/2011
The starter was very good and attendant, Bruce, was great. Bruce needs to be cloned. Overall had a good time until Chuck the Marshall came around and told us to speed it up now as we were 3 holes behind on the 11th hole. The fact that we had teed off behind two twosomes that had quit at the turnaround didn't seem to enter ol' Chuckie's mind. The next Marshall understood but by that time the spirit of fun we were having was lost.
by Jerry (Manassas, Va.) - 05/09/2011
Great course. We did have a huge problem with slow play. It took 5 hours, 20 minutes because of this. The foursome ahead of us appeared to be hitting more than 1 ball, and there were open holes in front of them.
by Deffrey (Mequon, Wis.) - 04/21/2011
We normally play this course each November, but we played a round there last week. The course was in great shape and I could not believe how well the greens were rolling. The staff/service was impeccable as usual ... will be back in November.
by Roberta (Stuart, Fla.) - 04/18/2011
Our favorite G.C.
by Michael (Barnardsville, N.C.) - 02/22/2011
Possum Trot is one of our favorites! We always play there when we come to Myrtle. It's a very playable course for my wife (she only plays about 10-12 times per year) and it offers enough challenge for me from the back tees. Other courses could learn a lot from the staff at Possum Trot. I used to word as a cart attendant at Biltmore Forest CC in Asheville,N.C. (a course with a traditionally rich PGA Tour history where the likes of Hogan, Snead and Jones played) and I know how to provide excellent customer service, and I know excellent customer service when I see it and Possum Trot provides that every time we visit them.
by Jim & Sue (Cottage Grove, Minn.) - 10/20/2010
Staff excellent, especially dealing with an injury issue. Course in great condition and great value.
by Roger (Thomasville, N.C.) - 09/11/2010
As far as the course it was GREAT. I was unsure at times how far out I was after a drive. I had to look to see where the blue, red, or white lines were. I will play the couse again. Keep doing what you are. Thanks ... Roger... John 3:30 ...
by Joseph (Liverpool, N.Y.) - 09/01/2010
Due to excessive rain the course was not in that good of shape, (but) it is still one of my favorites.
by Jeff (Ashburn, Va.) - 07/29/2010
Not a difficult course so I'd recommend it to other hackers like myself; lower handicaps won't be challenged much. Despite what I read in other reviews the staff was very friendly and helpful, course in pretty decent condition for this time of year, great practice facilities. Juniors 17 and under playing free is a huge plus.
by Jeff (Clymer, Penn.) - 06/23/2010
One of my favorites! Holes into the wind play pretty long, even from the white tees. The 18th par 5 is a fun finishing hole.
by Doug (Ellicott City, Md.) - 05/10/2010
Nice challenging course.
by Sandra (Clinton, Ontario) - 03/23/2010
This was a favourite course of mine ... however we will not play here again ... course was in very poor condition ... greens especially ...
by Scott (Spring Hill, Tenn.) - 03/16/2010
Possum Trot is open with long difficult holes but has the truest greens for chipping and putting. The course was in excellent condition.
by Eugene (Atlantic Beach, N.C.) - 12/04/2009
Course does not drain well. Cart path only on multiple holes. Overseeding of greens left them quite shabby.
by Matt (Grand Island, N.Y.) - 12/01/2009
This is a nice course for the money and a great choice for higher handicappers. My wife, who is a beginner, really enjoyed it. I really liked the layout of the holes. The greens were in rough shape and very slow but the rest of the course was in fairly good shape (even with a lot of rain over the previous week or two). The entire staff here was very friendly. We played on Thanksgiving and were given a complimentary turkey sandwich for lunch after the round ... nice touch! If you're looking for a decent, reasonably priced course in MB, I recommend playing here.
by Stephen - 11/13/2009
Always enjoy this course. Everyone wants to return and play again.9
by Helen (Perth, Ontario) - 11/12/2009
The course and staff of Possum Trot has made this a favorite. Would recommend this course to anyone going down to Mrytle Beach to put on their play list.
by John (Spring Hill, Kansas) - 11/07/2009
Nice, easy track. Wide fairways. Greens in poor shape.
by Leonard (Fort Worth, Tex.) - 11/02/2009
Our favorite course and they are always very accommodating.
by Don & Joan - 10/26/2009
Always a great experience on this mature golf course ...
by James (Easton, Md.) - 10/18/2009
Rain affected playing conditions. Course very wet.
by Ian (Manchester, U.K.) - 10/15/2009
Good starter course.
by William - 10/10/2009
My wife had a very good round shooting 83. She liked the course very much and will play it again.
by Gus (Buford, Ga.) - 10/09/2009
Always nice to play this course.
by David - 09/25/2009
Not the most glamorous course on the Grand Strand but one of the funniest with the best folks around. Older course that is a lot of fun without all the glitz and glamor they put in many courses these days. So good we played it twice in one day!
by Gerald (Bethel Park, Penn.) - 07/20/2009
The staff was extremely nice and helpful. Enjoyed playing the course, would definitely come back again.
by Claude (Quebec) - 06/15/2009
I totally agree with the previous comment from A.E. I have also been golfing at courses in and around Myrtle Beach for more than 15 years and I have never had a bad experience as the one I had at Possum Trot, specially from the people on the course. They were not very welcoming. They probably don't understand how to be nice with people. I will not play that course again.
by A.E. (Charlotte, N.C.) - 06/14/2009
The course was OK for a $50 course, but not great. I have been golfing at courses in and around Myrtle Beach for years and by far the staff at this course are the rudest I have ever encountered. Apparently this is a theme for this course based on previous reviews. As stated before the course was average, top it off with the ridiculously rude staff I will never play there again, and will ensure my friends and family will not either.
by Vance (Houston, Tex.) - 05/27/2009
We all found this to be a really fun track. The facility is not as fancy as some of the other places we played, but it has everything we went there for - - a golf course with lots of interesting holes, a good pace of play, and a tasty hot dog promptly served at the turn. We played 27 holes and had a blast.
by David - 04/28/2009
This was our first time at Possum Trot. We enjoyed the whole experience at this golf course. Nice layout, great condition, friendly staff. We went back two days later to enjoy it again!
by Dave - 02/23/2009
by Roy - 02/23/2009
Our tee-time was 1147 hrs. We enjoyed the course, BUT, the guys in the pro shop and the guy working the grill were grumpy and not very welcoming. The starter and his assistant (African-American guy) were very warm and friendly. Another old -timer who loaded the bags was rude when one of our foursome started to load his own bag on the golf cart. Again, we all enjoyed the course, but the behavior of a few of the employees was what we talked about after the round.
by Bruce - 02/23/2009
Excellent course. looking forward to playing course again
by Sue - 02/23/2009
I am not sure why top or over seeding should prevent you from driving your cart on the fairways. As wide as your fairways are, often it was quite a walk to your ball on the other side of the fairway. It also slowed up play, especially when you had to get another club because you had to shape your shot differently.
by Eric - 02/19/2009
A good start to the week. The greens were fuzzy and inconsistent by noon. From hole to hole it felt different which made it difficult to get into a rhythm.
