One of the North Carolina’s newest courses, Leopard’s Chase Golf Links recently received an overall ranking of 7.9 from reviewers at Myrtle Beach Golf Insider. The course also received higher marks regarding its staff and tee boxes. The Tom Cate design is the fourth of the Big Cat Courses at Ocean Ridge Plantation, an up-and-coming housing development. In 2007, it was named by both Golf Digest and Golf Magazine as one of the “Top 10 New Public Courses in America”, the first of what is expected to be numerous awards for Leopard’s Chase.

The fairways on the entire course utilize TifSport Bermuda, and the greens use a meticulously manicured L-93 Bermuda. Most of the vistas and marshlands that were already in place on the 220-acre track of land remain. But it’s how the course – which plays as long as 7,155 yards in this five-tee system – was designed to incorporate the aforementioned environment that give Leopard’s Chase its immaculate feel. Bunkers were added alongside natural grasses, and the visual elements make each other pop, both to the eye and the ensuing pictures. Those bunkers are nothing short of scary in some spots. The semi-island green on the par-4 No. 5 is encased in pearl-white sand and a waste bunker that extends back into the fairway. Your round is not complete until you’ve played No. 18, a 439-yard par 4 that includes a cascading, man-made waterfall in front of an elevated green. The coquina boulders used for the project attract plenty of pictures, and rightfully so. Every minute, 1,600 gallons of water splash down from one pond the rocks and into an accompanying lake.

Located just across the state line in Ocean Isle Beach, N.C., Leopard’s Chase is just a short drive north on U.S. 17 from downtown Myrtle Beach.

My son and I have played all the CAT courses and Leopards Chase is the best of all them all.
