Originally opened in 1968 and designed by Gene Hamm, the then-Quail Creek Golf Club became a particular favorite among local Myrtle Beach golfers. It has gained even further recognition since a renovation by local architect Craig Schreiner that saw the course reopen in 2011 with a fresh look. Schreiner updated the bunkering and the green complexes in particular, also adding a bit of length to the golf course and bringing it up to 6,897 yards from the back Black tee set. The course is a par 72, with the traditional configuration of ten par fours, four par threes and four par fives.

With smallish greens that are well protected by bunkers and water (which comes into play on six holes), The Hackler Course at Coastal Carolina University places a premium on accuracy, rather than brute force. This is especially true at one of the course’s signature holes, the 362-yard par four 18th. The tee shot may not need to be played with a driver, but it needs to hit the fairway in order for the player to navigate a bunker left of the green, water on the right and a tree that overhangs the green complex. Prudent play will yield a birdie putt and a potentially dramatic finish to the round.

Because The Hackler Course is owned and operated by Coastal Carolina University and played by many students, it has comprehensive facilities to serve the many people who visit. A grass driving range is complemented by a 3,000 square foot putting and chipping green, and there is a larger short game practice area on site as well. The clubhouse is quaint but functional, with a pro shop where visitors can buy Coastal Carolina-branded golf apparel as well as any other needs for a round.

Aka as Hackler Golf Course - very nice course - staff were very nice etc. Our group liked Hackler the best of the courses we played...would play again.

Staff at bag drop, grill and clubhouse were awesome! We had such a fun time playing this course. The greens and fairways were overly firm but that is expected at the beginning of the season. We will return next year!

Course needs some work but was a fun course. I can see thay are working on it.. Man in Pro shop wasn't overly friendly

Course was in good shape for winter golf, green nice and fairways green lots of doglegs left to right. Staff was very nice head pro took very good care of are large group.

With heavy rain the night before, it would have been better to have closed this and most courses. Instead we were subjected to conditions on the course where standing water occupied most of the fairways. That meant that your drive only got a few inches of roll instead of a normal 20-30 yards. And since carts were not allowed to go on the fairways, (as was appropriate) you had to trek to your drive through mud and puddles. That made for a miserable day of golf on a course that you could tell would normally be enjoyable to play.

We understand this course is owned by the University and is usually on a tight budget, but we were very disappointed in the maintenance of the course. Because the course was in such poor condition, we probably could not fairly judge the layout. By the time we were through playing, all 24 guys had decided we do not want to play that course again.
