Eagle Nest is located just north of the bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway in Little River, South Carolina, in the heart of the Myrtle Beach area’s north end. Designed by Gene Hamm and opened in 1971, it is one of the venerable locations for golf in Myrtle Beach, now in its fifth decade of operation. It is a straightforward but intriguing challenge of a golf course, with medium-sized greens well defended by bunkers. There is relatively little water on the golf course, which cuts down on the potential for lost golf balls and makes the course especially playable for golfers with wide-ranging handicaps. Another contributing factor to the golf course’s playability is the lack of housing on or around the golf course. Eagle’s Nest is therefore a “core golf” experience.

One place where golf balls may be in danger at Eagle Nest, however, is on the final three holes, regarded as comprising one of the sternest finishing stretches on any area golf course. That stretch begins with the 449-yard par four 16th, a straightaway two-shotter with water guarding the front and left of the wide, shallow green and three bunkers guarding the rear. Next up, the par five 17th is one of the longest on the Grand Strand, checking in at a whopping 616 yards from the back Blue tees. A large pond must be crossed on the third shot to the elevated green, guarded by three bunkers, in order to have a prayer at a par, much less a birdie. Finally, the par-three 18th, at 185 yards from the tips, demands a solid middle-iron over yet another pond to yet another green guarded by three more bunkers.

The facilities at Eagle Nest are carefully crafted to match the aesthetic and feel of the golf course. The spacious driving range has a large grass hitting area and the championship putting green is built to mimic the speed and undulations found on the greens of the golf course. Indoors, Eagle Nest’s pro shop, snack bar and 19th hole all offer great merchandise, great food and drink before and after one’s appointed rounds.

Beautiful layout and surroundings, but course is in bad need of repair. Fairways are tolerable, greens are terrible and appear to be painted or stained a green color. The rough is nonexistent in most areas. This would be a beautiful coarse when someone invest in the maintenance and up keep of greens.

Everyone in the group agreed that this course was in the worst shape of all the courses we played. The drainage of the course is very poor. It rained the day prior and all of the tees, fairways and greens had standing water on them. even after the sun came out and the winds were very strong, the was still in the same condition as we started.

Greens were not in very good condition. Fairways were fair. Not a very challenging course. Good starter to golf vacation.
