Heather Glen
4650 Heather Glen Way, Little River, SC
8.3
One of the Myrtle Beach’s top-rated golf courses, Heather Glen Golf Links recently earned a ranking of 8.5 on Golf Insider, with particular positive attention paid to the quality of the conditioning of the golf course.
Located just south of the North Carolina/South Carolina Border in Little River, Heather Glen was designed by American Society of Golf Course Architects member Clyde Johnston and opened in 1987. It is one of a small handful of courses in the Myrtle Beach area with 27 holes—the Red, White and Blue nines. All three are around the same length from all four sets of tees and have a par of 36, making for a par 72 golf course, no matter which two a golfer plays—though many visitors elect to play all 27 holes in a day! Heather Glen earned 4 ½ out of a possible five stars on Golf Digest’s “Places to Play” ranking.
Clyde Johnston debuted many of the features that can be found at sister course Glen Dornoch Waterway Golf Links at Heather Glen. But whereas Glen Dornoch opens op onto the Intracoastal Waterway, Heather Glen is situated a little farther inland. That being the case, Heather Glen harkens to many of the features of the great heathland golf courses of interior Great Britain. Some of the features of those courses that can be found at Heather Glen include gnarly pot bunkers, large trees overhanging portions of greens, tees and fairways and extensive mounding and undulating putting surfaces. Water hazards come into play on a dozen of the property’s 27 holes, adding to the challenge. One hole where this true is the oft-photographed eighth hole on the White nine, called “Spectacle.” It plays 409 yards from the back Blue tee but is a fierce dogleg-left around water that players can challenge in order to leave as little as a wedge second shot. The penalty for missing the small landing area can be severe, as water, sand and rough all come into play. The green is guarded by two bunkers.
Off the golf course, Heather Glen has well-appointed facilities. The stately clubhouse is set in a tranquil woodland area, affording golfers and other visitors from the community the opportunity to have a drink or a bite to eat with a view. The practice facilities are wonderful as well, with a spacious grass-tee driving range and a practice putting and chipping green—as well as a practice bunker—close by.
