Opened in 1986 and designed by developer Larry Young and architect Dan Maples, Heritage Club is one of the more inventive designs golfers are likely to find. With gnarly bunkers guarding enormous, boldly-contoured greens, the experience of playing Heritage Club is thrilling and unforgettable. Live oaks hold court all over the property and two holes play by 150-plus year old cemeteries, lending a sense of history to the place. Numerous prominent magazines have ranked the course among the top public golfing venues in the Southeast and Golf Digest gives it 4 ½ out of five stars on its “Places to Play” list.

The course is a par-71, with three par fives, four par threes and 11 par fours. The last of these is the most thrilling: the 506-yard 18th. A well-struck drive leaves the golfer with an age-old interesting decision: go for it or lay up? If the former, care must be taken to choose the proper yardage for one’s third shot. If the latter, the best long iron or fairway wood of the day is required to reach the green, guarded short, left and right by a lake. There is bailout area long and left but the shot is largely all-or-nothing. A well-timed, well-executed shot has decided many matches at Heritage Club.

Off the golf course, Heritage Club has spectacular facilities. The stately 12,000 square foot Colonial-style clubhouse has attractive views of the surrounding area, dotted with centuries-old live oak trees. The practice facilities are wonderful as well, with a spacious grass-tee driving range and a practice putting and chipping green close by.

Heritage Club, one of the gems of the southern Grand Strand, boasts a Golf Insider rating of 8.7, with particular praise for its clubhouse, pro shop and grill.
