River Club1 Club Circle, Pawleys Island, SC 29585
River Club is a course you want to play on your next Myrtle Beach golf trip. Its Lowcountry setting is memorable and the layout has been awarded 4.5-stars by Golf Digest.
The Tom Jackson design requires players to hit a variety of shots, but the challenges are always visible from the tee or fairway. The layout is of moderate length, playing 6,240 yards from the white tees, but it’s a second shot course.
The fairways provide ample room to bomb away off the tee and the greens are conducive to making putts, but you have to be in the right spots. Some combination of water and sand protect nearly every green and the majority of the trouble is in the front, so, when in doubt, pull an extra club.
The 15th – a 409-yard par 4 that requires a carry over water off the tee and on the approach – is the course’s hardest hole, but the the par 5 18th is the most memorable. The 18th, which was named one of the Grand Strand’s 100 most memorable holes by the Sun News, plays 493 yards from the white tees and water runs from the left side of the tee box to the green.
The ambitious go for the green in two, but length, accuracy and more than a little daring are necessary for success. Regardless of how you play it, River Club is a treat.
