Blackmoor Golf Club

Less than midway through a round at Blackmoor Golf Club, a good number of players ask themselves why they didn’t try the other approach to No. 8.

Standing on the tee box of arguably the most distinctive hole, a straight-line shot toward the green creates an internal battle against the secondary option, where the fairway is wider and extremely accessible even with an off-center shot. The first option shaves upwards of 100 yards off the total distance but requires a trek through deep grass and a narrow corridor.

The second leads to a dogleg with a full 90-degree turn.

Consider this the highlight of Gary Player’s lone Grand Strand signature course. Also consider it part of one major reason golfers keep coming back.

“It’s fair to all skill levels,” head professional Paul Fastenau said. “We do grab a good bit of that local play because it doesn’t beat them up too bad.”

The relatively shorter course has earned nods from various senior and women’s groups in the past, as Blackmoor measures 5,700 yards for the forward tees and approximately 4,800 for the ladies. But much like No. 8, even lower handicappers and longer hitters will find a challenge.

Course is not long, but you must place your ball in the right place in the fairways to score. I played with a golfer that knew the course well and that helped significantly.

I love playing this course. I'm not a long hitter and this course let's me consider different strategy's off the tee, mainly because a lot of the holes are dog legs. The course was in very good condition and the greens were fast and true. The staff has always been friendly and I have never had a bad experience here. I highly recommend it.

Not being an accomplished golfer, I appreciated the "fairness" of the course. I could enjoy my round without needing a ton of "local" knowledge. The Starter, course advisor, and club attendant were great. Also the young lady on the beverage cart was great too.

We enjoyed Blackmoor. The greens were in good shape, in fact the course was in good shape for the time of the year, early February. It was gonna for both the men in the group and the woman. She had a reasonable advantage!

Played with my regular foursome in a Veteran's tournament at Blackmoor - conditions were terrific. Tee boxes, fairways, and greens were well maintained. Plenty of doglegs. If you are playing here, take a look at the aerials to determine strategy.

We enjoyed our first time at Blackmoor. My threesome has been playing courses across the grand strand for 12 years, and we found Blackmoor to be a good course with a couple of notable holes among a bunch of others that are like the rest of the area. The conditioning was good, but the staff were the real value: great people who wanted us to have a great time. When you compare that with the attractive fees, we found Blackmoor a very good value.

The greens are the best they have ever been. Course was a little wet because of heavy rain the day before but still playable. Nice staff who helped us get out early and quick turn on the back nine.

Thoroughly enjoyable day. From the moment we arrived at the bag drop we were made to feel welcome. The Pro shop, Grill and Starter took time out to talk to us and give us some background to the course and the lay out. A very tricky tight course and you had to make sure you were in the right position at the dog leg to get to the green. If I had one complaint it would be the lack of a 2nd ladies tee. My wife gave me a thorough beating off those forward tees and I ended up cooking the evening meal.

Course is in the best shape it has been in over the last 10 years. Tees were good and greens are a little slow but very consistent. The staff was great and helpful. The only downside was the lack of water coolers on the back nine. Water can be helpful on hot days.

Played Blackmoor for the first time today and I would say it is a must play! Granted I would not play there after large amounts of rain but if dry the course has great character with each hole being its own. The staff was very friendly and asking if they could do anything to make your experience more enjoyable. Overall the price point is awesome and a great time.

Blackmoor Golf Club
by James (Fredericksburg, VA) -
The course was saturated with water and very close to unplayable. Grass in fairways was 3+ inches and balls plugged and difficult to locate. Three in our party of six after front nine and received rain-checks for nine holes each. Three of us played through 13 and quit due to playing conditions. Would LOVE to come back and play when conditions more favorable. Layout excellent.

Tee times too close together. Felt rushed and crowded. Also, fairway grass far too high. Can't find the ball after a nice tee shot in the middle of the fairway. Frustrating!

The course was really beautiful. But since it just got a lot of rain, it was wet and grass was thick so difficult to find your ball - even on really great shots so was very frustrating.

The folks were great especially the starter, great guy made you feel at home. The course was in great shape, especially the greens. One par 4 was made into a par 3, not sure if permanent but I would state that on the web site.

I would like to have known that the rough had not been cut for several days as it was very frustrating when you could not find a golf ball even if it had gone off fairway by as much as a yard.

Blackmoor Golf Club
by Robert -
The staff was polite and efficient. The clubhouse is comparatively small but comfortable. Greens and fairways are exceptional. The grounds crew stopped what they were doing and pulled the mowers out of the fairways to let us go through, that is not something you see at all the MB courses. Of course we will be going back. Not sure why the bar slides turned red, either a bad design or lousy programming. They should be green

Blackmoor Golf Club
by Michael (Manahawkin, NJ) -
Greeted by friendly and helpful staff. Course was in great condition. The greens rolled fast and true and were still able to hold approach shots. The course is fair as the fairways are wide enough in most places to hold slightly errant shots. A very good golf experience I would recommend to all levels of players.

The course was in good condition and we enjoyed it very much. We were confused by the cart guys. They loaded our clubs and we thought they would unload and clean the clubs. Our plans were to tip them at the end of the round but they didn't come to the cart so we unloaded ourselves. Sorry cart guys!!

Staff was friendly I just selected 2 golfers I would have like to have know that they were putting us with 2 other golfers I'm glad they did because they were very nice I would have just like to have known. Also they were cutting the tees and some of the fairways while we were playing it was okay because they would get out of our way but I still think they should have a couple of hours where the course is closed so they can get everything done.

This course was the best experience of the week. It was so nice to play where you are appreciated. From the minute we got there until we left they made us feel special. The man taking water to golfers all over the course was a nice touch. Although one hole next to the road had to be changed to a par three it didn't make a difference. We will play this course whenever we come down. I cannot tell you how well we were treated. It was great.

by Joshua (Windsor Locks, CT) -
Very challenging course, they had us start on the back which is much tougher than the front. Greens weren't in the best shape yet, but that will change soon I'm sure. Lots of blind 2nd shots and dogleg rights, if you're a draw player you may want to Look elsewhere. Overall pretty good, bring a decent game with you that day.

Me and my friends play Blackmoor weekly and it is by far the best at the beach. The reason starts with the staff, just as friendly as they come. Paul the golf pro is simply the easiest to work with and always there to lend a helping hand. His leadership around the pro shop and bag drop spills over to the rest of the staff. The course is in excellent shape, fairways nice and plush and greens are just as nice. Lots of courses could take notes on how this course is managed. Simply the best.

Blackmoor was the first course that allowed carts on fairways this week. There was lots of rain the days prior. Tees and fairways were in good shape. Two greens were a little sparse. The other greens ran true. Lots of 90 degree holes made you think of where to put the ball for the next shot. I enjoyed the round for the price.

Kind of a quirky layout, but not bad to play. However, this year - their greens were not in good shape, in fact about 5 of them were very bad due to some black fungus or winter rot. That being said, pro shop staff was courteous, grill lady allowed us to watch the final round of the Masters. But overall, our group of 20 said not to schedule this place again.
