Time has not forgotten the PineHills Course at Myrtlewood Golf Club.

One of the four oldest courses on South Carolina’s Grand Strand, the track was originally opened in 1966 as the Pines before an Arthur Hills overhaul in 1993 led to its new moniker. The refresher kept PineHills current, requiring a touch more skill than its previous inhabitant.

“PineHills is more of a strategic placement,” head professional Ryan Ruddy said. “It’s got the rolling hills. It goes through both sides of the property. It’s a fun, challenging golf course. It’s more thought process than just going out there and smashing the driver.”

Nearly 400 yards shorter than its sister course, the Palmetto, first timers and regulars alike agree that PineHills is the bigger challenge. Aside from a rolling terrain, water is visible on 17 of the 18 holes, with nine of them directly affecting strategy.

Take the par-five No. 3, for example. It is on the course’s signature hole where players must angle their tee shot away from an elongated pond up the right side in order to not only stay dry, but to also set up a second shot where the bending hazard doesn’t rear its head once more.
