MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. | It has been nearly two decades since South Carolina’s Grand Strand golfing mecca hosted a PGA or LPGA event. Three properties, in fact all had their turns in the mid-90s and early 2000s, as well as a U.S. Women’s Open in the early 1960s. <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/tournament-player-club">TPC of Myrtle Beach </a>was the last, hosting the 2000 Senior Tour Championship, after the tournament previously was held at <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/the-dunes-golf-and-beach-club">Dunes Golf &amp; Beach Club</a> for six years. Prior to that, <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/the-dunes-golf-and-beach-club">Dunes</a> had that Open, and <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/wachesaw-east-golf-club">Wachesaw East</a> got four cracks at an LPGA event (of various names/sponsorships) between 1997-2000. <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/dye-at-barefoot-resort">The Dye Club at Barefoot Resort &amp; Golf </a>serves as the annual home to the Monday After the Masters celebrity Pro-Am. However, we started thinking about what a full-fledged professional event along South Carolina’s northern coastline could look like again. There are logistical hurdles, of course, some that would be navigated better than others. Gallery space, clubhouse needs, even parking &#8211; it all comes into play. When it comes to the actual golf, though, we got to dreaming.
TIDEWATER GOLF CLUB
We started with the idea here that North Myrtle Beach may be a good spot, if for no other reason that it hasn’t had the opportunity to do so yet. But you can’t pull that off with a slouch of a course. <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/tidewater-golf-club-plantation">Tidewater</a> is no slouch. This Ken Tomlinson track was actually designed with the idea of bringing in a professional event (the course’s own biography listed the Ryder Cup, for instance). We could certainly see the pros putting on No. 13, just mere steps from the backdrop of the Cherry Grove Inlet. For what it’s worth, Tidewater is not the most difficult of designs for the common golfer playing from the midlevel tees. However, from the 7,044-yard championships, the slope here is the same as Beth Page Black or the Ocean Course at Kiawah.

We’re not going to lie; when this idea spawned, it had every bit to do with how the biggest names in the game would tackle the par-5 No. 6 at <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/myrtle-beach-national-kings-north">King’s North.</a> Affectionately known as “The Gambler”, the elongated island fairway probably wouldn’t be that big of a deal to professionals and the precision they possess in their bags. Even from the back tees, the 568 yards of this hole wouldn’t be prohibitive for those types. However, the second shot into the green could have a feel similar to the 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass. After getting onto the island fairway, players would have to carry the water again onto a peninsula green with no forgiveness to the left or front. A gallery off to the right of the traditional fairway would get their money’s worth on this hole alone.
CALEDONIA GOLF &amp; FISH CLUB
Some of the most iconic visuals in professional golf each year are of players walking the final holes, their caddies lock step behind or next to them, and a stellar clubhouse scene and nature popping in front of them. Along South Carolina’s northern coastline, maybe no course would offer such a view as a walk up No. 18 at <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/caledonia-golf-and-fish-club">Caledonia</a>. While the hole plays no longer than 383 yards, after a shot into the fairway, and carrying an oversized pond into the green, the pros would then have a lengthy walk up and around to the left. It would complete a made-for-television type environment. We’d even recommend opening the Thursday telecast with some type of slow-motion video coming onto the grounds up through the tree-lined parkway.
