What makes a winning 19th hole? It goes without saying the quality of the food is paramount. A not-too-chatty bartender and wait staff, you know, people that will laugh at your jokes and congratulate you on making a birdie on the tough 12th hole. An interesting selection of craft beers and single malts is a must. A good wine list helps. But more than these considerations a good 19th hole gives you a warm and welcoming feel – especially when you’re on a golf trip in less-than-familiar territory.
We all have our favorite clubhouse watering holes, but here are a few places we really like to hunker down after a round in Myrtle Beach. Call for a beer or whisky neat, sit back and enjoy the view and company of good friends.
<a href="http://www.mbn.com/courses/caledonia-golf-and-fish-club">Caledonia Golf and Fish Club</a>: Merely driving onto the property is special, especially when the azaleas between the live oaks, draped with Spanish moss, are in full bloom. The dining experience at Caledonia is decidedly Carolina in flavor, with signature dishes including soups, salads, wraps, seafood, barbeque, burgers, “heart smarts,” and “gut busters.” The staff caters to your every whim. It’s a tradition to sit on the patio overlooking the 18th green, beverage in hand, and bet with your buddies on whether each player approaching home will clear a large pond that fronts the green.

The signature dish here has been on the menu for years; the Kidnappers Seafood Special. You can choose from grouper, shrimp, scallops and oysters. They can be fried, scampi, broiled, sautéed or blackened. The club boasts a private label wine Schug Winery out of Carneros, California. The views are also scrumptious.

Built in 1927, this course lays claim to being the oldest in the Myrtle Beach area, which is very cool in and of itself. Part of a $15 million renovation project in 2009 was the creation of the Robert White Pub, named for the architect of Pine Lakes. White was also the first president of the Professional Golfers&#8217; Association of America and a co-founder of the American Society of Golf Course Architects. There’s a panoramic view of the course that is as sweet as pecan pie, with large glass doors and windows giving guests a full view of the course. They come far and wide for the pub’s specialty prime rib sandwich. It’s slow roasted and served with a choice of skin on French fries, sweet potato fries, beer battered onion rings or fresh fruit.
Give one or all of these 19th holes a whirl on your next Myrtle Beach golf trip. You won’t be disappointed.
