Like nearly all Mike Strantz designs, <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/true-blue">True Blue Golf Club</a> in Pawleys is an audacious layout.
The fairways, nearly 100 yards wide in spots, are enormous. The greens are as undulating as they are big, and the expansive waste bunkers that line holes provide a visual contrast that helps define the course.
Even in a market with 90 layouts, True Blue is unforgettable.
Where it ranks on your list of Myrtle Beach’s best golf courses can be debated, but <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/true-blue">True Blue</a> is on every credible shortlist of the area’s top courses. From an opening par 5, the toughest hole on the course, according to the scorecard, to the par 4 closer, True Blue takes golfers on an unforgettable ride.
While it’s highly subjective, here are True Blue’s three best holes, from the perspective of a (very) average golfer.
&#8212; The par 3 third hole (top photo) is listed at 141 yards (all yardages from the white tee &#8211; this is the opinion of a less than elite player!) and requires a long carry over water. The peanut shaped green runs diagonally away from the tee box. When the hole is cut in the front half of the green, the carry is minimized and a short iron will suffice. If the greenskeeper wakes up angry and the hole is set in the back, lookout. The tee shot to a back pin is a white knuckler that can approach 160 yards. On the bright side, if you leave your ball to the alligators in the water, the drop area is just off the green, enhancing your chances of getting up-and-down for bogey.<img decoding="async" alt="True Blue Golf Club 10th Hole" src="/media/images/DJI_0767-edit_(1).jpg" style="width: 300px;height: 169px;float: right" />
&#8212; <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/true-blue">True Blue</a> is home to five par 5s, and they could all be on this list, but I’m going with the 559-yard 10th hole (pictured right). Like all the course’s three-shotters, the fairway is huge but players face a risk-reward decision. The optimal landing area is the center-right of the fairway, but there is a (how did you guess?) waste bunker along the starboard side. Find the sand and clearing the series of bunkers that bisect the fairway approximately 130 yards in the distance becomes infinitely more difficult. The approach to yet another green that is nearly 50 yards deep requires a carry over wetlands and a cavernous bunker. Taken individually, none of the three shots are exceedingly difficult, but there is tension on every swing and it helps make the hole memorable.
&#8212; The par 4 18th plays 406 anxiety-inducing yards and there is a premium placed on accuracy. Water runs from tee to green on the left and sand looms on the right. The fairway is nearly 70 yards wide, but it’s tough to avoid seeing the trouble when the preferred landing spot is close to the water. Assuming you navigate the tee shot, an approach to a green that cants from right to left waits. Miss in the run-off area on the right side of the putting surface and a harrowing chip toward the water awaits. To further complicate matters, the green is 60 yards deep, so a back flag means you may have to pull two more clubs. It’s a dramatic conclusion that plays out in the shadow of the clubhouse.
