<p>Chris King was raised in Front Royal, Virginia, a place with a few courses but nothing to really let him sink his teeth into the game. Same goes for Ian Guerin, who spent most of his childhood in Lenexa, Kansas. Options for rounds were there, but not on the type of courses that could have pushed either to play and develop more.</p>

<p>Here on South Carolina’s Grand Strand, that’s not an issue. For locals who are looking to get into the game or inspire their kids to do the same &#8211; or for out-of-towners who want to bring little Johnny or June with them &#8211; there are choices to be had without feeling like it’s too much for them to bite off or sacrificing the visual and design elements more experienced players need and want.</p>

<p><strong>IG:</strong> Chris, we’ve danced around this topic in the past, and I’m sure the first course I’m thinking of is one I’ve mentioned before, too. The <a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/myrtle-beach-national-west-course">West Course at Myrtle Beach National</a> is every bit of a true regulars’ track in that it won’t cost you an arm and a leg but still provides some of the best surfaces in the area. Clearly, it’s drawing a ton of attention thanks to sharing the property with King’s North. Regardless, it’s got great scoring chances for the more experienced players and no real forced carries that would cripple younger ones.</p>

<p><strong>CK: </strong>The West Course, for all the reasons you listed, is understandably popular with newbies, but it&#8217;s hardly the only option. If you are willing to drive just across the state line, <a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/meadowlands-golf-club">Meadowlands Golf Club</a> was one of the area&#8217;s quiet stars in 2023, delivering outstanding conditions and a layout that is forgiving from beginning to end. The Willard Byrd design also features tees that play 5,512 yards (hummingbird) and 6,080 yards (egret), so length shouldn&#8217;t be an issue. <p><strong>IG:</strong> I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that after a lengthy layoff I once used Meadowlands to get me back into a groove. I’d played a much tougher track and realized I needed to hit the reset button. Byrd’s courses tend to have the range that players of different skill sets need. I believe that’s the case with his <a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/litchfield-country-club">Litchfield Country Club</a> layout, too. There are a ton of doglegs and blind shots for those who choose to go that route, but anyone who wants to scale back or can’t hit the ball a ton have clear lines of sight.</p>

<p><strong>CK:</strong> Good call on Litchfield. Given how many people stay in heart of Myrtle Beach, the <a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/myrtlewood-golf-club-pinehills">PineHills Course at Myrtlewood</a> is a recommended stop. It’s not as easy &#8211; I hate to use that word in relation to golf! &#8211; as the other layouts on the list, but it’s playable. This applies to nearly everyone but don’t be afraid to move up a set of tees at PineHills because there are a couple forced carries here. &nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>IG:</strong> And I think if avoiding forced carries are the way to involve more younger players, we have to remember when we’re taking our kids out that there’s no PGA official watching and keeping track of our misadventures. Don’t be afraid to keep some duffer balls handy for them to try, but remember to encourage them when it doesn’t go well and then drop their next ball close to your tee shot or someone’s who didn’t end up in the pine straw. That’s another point where we agree: PineHills has forgiving sidelines. If we’re working off that M.O., what’s another inland track you think works?</p>

The fairways are wide and per the USGA&#8217;s slope and rating system, it&#8217;s one of the area&#8217;s easiest tracks. <a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/crown-park">Crown Park</a> is a low-stress design that will allow you to get comfortable on the course without breaking the bank.</p>
