When you come to <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/willbrook-plantation">Willbrook Plantation Golf Club</a>, it’s never meant to be just about a few good or bad shots.
Dan Maples’ layout was meant to be much more.
In the three-plus decades since it opened for links play, Willbrook has combined the now and then, tying it together with a bunch of land that can be honored as it should be. These are the five reasons you should take advantage.
THE OPENER
Love at first sight doesn’t get much better than what Maples did with his 400-yard, Par 4 No. 1. All he wants you to do is carry an incidental wetland into a fairway and stick it just right to leave a great shot at the green in regulation. The dogleg right and a left-fairway tree prevent that from happening for most, of course, but the pop of all that green means something.
THE LAND
Oatland Creek has been feeding this property for a long, long time. And since the small off-shoot of the Waccamaw River keeps the water levels stable, that means horticulturalists-turned-golfers get the best of both worlds. The trees here are a mix of old and relatively new. Several of the fairways are hugged by naturally flowing water. And wildlife takes advantage of both.

Between the ninth and 10th holes, players have the opportunity to stop and do their thing. It could mean a drink, a bite to eat or just a pit stop. But what sandwiches that quick return to the clubhouse is a fluid dynamic from the two holes around it. A 355-yard Par 4 kicks you over to a 334-yard one. This is your great momentum builder into the back nine.
THE HISTORY
We already know what roughly 2,600 acres of rice land in the 1700s and 1800s meant. And although slaves were a part of it, Willbrook has never shied away from their existence or how to honor them. Five of the six historical markers on the property illicit ties to the transgressions of old. Albert Doctor, among many others, has not been forgotten.
THE FINAL PUTT
The 471-yard Par 5 18th isn’t easy. It kicks to the right off the tee, and the approach shot is encumbered by a few trees on the left and a bunker on the right. But once you get to the green, putting out a few yards from the clubhouse will close book on what was an ultra-enjoyable round you’ll want to relive first-hand again and again.
