<p>There are holes that offer a little bit of water.&nbsp;Maybe a large pond. Possibly a forced carry into the green. Or even a par-3 island putting surface.&nbsp;And then there are these doozies.&nbsp;Throughout the courses dotting the landscape of South Carolina’s northern coastlines, five holes have riddled players for years. The water taunts us from tee to green, making us wonder just how many times we’re going to plunk a ball for a diver to find later.&nbsp;On these par 4s and 5s, exercise some extra caution; you’ll be rewarded one way or the other.</p>

<p>First-timers at Tom Jackson’s design need to be ready for No. 18. But before you even get to that point, another hole here probably takes the cake. That’s saying something, considering nearly every hole here is wrapped around lakes and streams. Off the tee of this 384-yarder, anything fading even remotely left is a goner. If you reach the fairway successfully, you have an inlet off the elongated pond to carry in order to reach the green in regulation. There isn’t much wiggle room, and birdies here require the utmost length and precision.</p>

<p>There is an aspect to “The Gambler” that few people even consider. We can’t blame them, as the island fairway up the left draws the bulk of the attention as players’ eyes get big thinking of going for the green in two. Back on the primary fairway, though, water is still in play pretty much throughout. Up the right side, two ponds sandwich an oversized waste bunker. And then as players get further up, the large lake framing the island fairway comes into play again.</p>

<p>Tom Fazio didn’t go all out with the wet stuff at <u><a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/tournament-player-club">TPC</a></u>. It certainly doesn’t feel like that on the second hole, though, where players off all five tee boxes have to think about it from the get-go. Longer players must consider the pond jutting in on the left, while ladies and seniors have a separate pond further up the left. The thick tree line on the right forces nearly everyone back to the left, and it just so happens that much of the fairway slopes back that way, too.</p>

<p>Shank a tee shot left into a would-be no-man’s land of this 369-yard par 4, and you may be kicking yourself. That is, of course, until you think of the drop-riffic alternative. A curving pond separates the tee boxes from the fairway, and then the fairway from the approach zone. It all adds up to prevent players from going right at any given point of this hole. Oh, and did we mention the different sliver stream up to the left by the green?</p>

<p><u><a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/long-bay-golf-club">LONG BAY CLUB </a></u>NO. 18</p>

<p>As dry as Jack Nicklaus’ <u><a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/long-bay-golf-club">Long Bay </a></u>is, it’s finishing hole is the opposite without going crazy in terms of design. All it took here is one large pond on the right and a carefully placed tree at the entry point of the fairway. With those two elements, the slight dogleg seems exaggerated to the&nbsp;point where players wrapping up their day on the links tend to overthink the hole. It can lead to some trouble that otherwise was nonexistent earlier in the round.</p>
