<p>From the Ruins to “The Gambler” to the Shortest Par 5 in Golf, there are unique holes along South Carolina’s Grand Strand that visitors have played time and again &#8211; not to mention told countless others about.</p>

<p>Reputations preceded, indeed.</p>

<p>But stepping away from the likes of the <a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/love-at-barefoot-resort">Love Course at Barefoot Resort</a>, <a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/myrtle-beach-national-kings-north">Myrtle Beach National’s King’s North</a> or <a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/pawleys-plantation">Pawleys Plantation Golf &amp; Country Club</a>, there are plenty more &#8211; often with a lot less notability or understanding of their place in local history.</p>

<p>That doesn’t make them any less intriguing. In fact, we think that means their relative obscurity helps them pack even more of a punch. These incredible approaches to the yardages they cover, their meaning to local golf and their places in history earn them special recognition.</p>

<p><strong><a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/founders-club">FOUNDERS CLUB AT PAWLEYS ISLAND</a>, NO. 1</strong><br>If you’re looking for a course unlike any other, look no further than the sand-riffic look at Founders Club. Of course, it didn’t used to be anything like this. By now, you might know that this property was once the Sea Gull Golf Club, one of the area’s first handful of courses. It was much different from 1966-2005, when it was shuttered and thought to soon be a housing development like many of its brethren.</p>

<p>Then, it was sold, and designer Thomas Walker moved some 270,000 cubic yards of dirt and sand around to create something fresh and original.</p>

<p>In 2008, Founders Club was unveiled, and the opening hole is the introduction of all introductions for what follows.</p>

<p>Each tee box on the opener requires a soft carry over a massive waste bunker onto an elevated landing zone that is set apart by a different blend of grass in the rough. Once you make it to the large, angled green, you’ll be able to take in the entire feel of this hole &#8211; if you haven’t already.</p>

<p><strong><a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/litchfield-country-club">LITCHFIELD COUNTRY CLUB</a>, NO. 17</strong><br>In the mid-1960, six people dreamed up an idea to put a golf course in Pawleys Island. They wanted to fill the primary inn serving the area and spent a whopping $40,000 and change for the first 370 acres of land for the course.</p>

<p>According to official course documentation, on the 17th hole, the wife of owner Lewis Thompson connected with an opening-day shot to set things on the right track. We’re not sure how far she hit from (the ladies tees are now set at 111 yards; but who knows what they looked like on Day 1). Grand opening? You bet.</p>

<p><strong><a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/willbrook-plantation">WILLBROOK</a>, NO. 18</strong><br>To the naked eye, Willbrook is a 471-yard dogleg right in which the daring in your group can even try to cut the slight corner in order to putt for eagle. The dueling tree lines frame a tight fairway on a beautiful hole.</p>

<p>But what half of those trees are disguising is centuries-old mounding that was hand-built in the 1700s to separate the one-time rice plantation’s property from that of the neighboring plantation.</p>

<p>When the course was built in the mid-1980s, the mounding and many other historical traits of the property were left intact to honor the slaves who lived and died here. Markers dot the landscape, including one here on No. 18 to notate the mounds.</p>
