<p>Architect Dan Maples has lauded <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/willbrook-plantation">Willbrook Plantation</a> as among his best designs and his affinity for the Pawleys Island beauty is easy to understand. The layout’s Lowcountry charm is accentuated by the live oak tree draped in Spanish moss that define nearly every hole and Maples challenges players in a variety of ways.&nbsp;</p>

<p>At risk of repeating what has often been said, Willbrook really is among the Myrtle Beach area’s most underrated tracks. The layout is interesting, occasionally unconventional, and absolutely challenging.&nbsp;</p>

<p>If you are looking for a little local knowledge to get a leg up on your buddies, here are 5 things you need to know about Willbrook.&nbsp;</p>

<p>– Playing 6,202 yards from the white tees (6,722 from the blues), <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/willbrook-plantation">Willbrook</a> is mostly a driver-friendly layout. There is ample room to land that ball and a baby draw is often the shot of preference, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t demanding tee shots. Holes 1, 8 and 18 will tighten up the purest of ball strikers and they all have one thing in common &#8211; they are hard dogleg rights (scrap that baby draw!) that offer little opportunity to attack the corner of the dogleg.&nbsp;</p>

The par 4 first hole is arguably the course’s most difficult and holes 2 and 3 aren’t much easier. The course doesn’t begin with a gentle handshake so the goal is to survive the first three holes; do so and a great score should await.</p>

<p>– Maples also offers plenty of opportunities to score, especially on the 120-yard par 3 (all distances from white tees) sixth and No. 7, a 324-yard par 4. On the back, holes 11 through 14, a long but not&nbsp;particularly threatening par 3 sandwiched between a pair of shortish par 4s, are begging golfers to get hot. Take advantage of those opportunities.&nbsp;</p>

<p>– Willbrook’s beauty is something to appreciate and it reveals itself on the first tee box, which is flanked by oak trees on the right and water on the left. The property enjoys many of the same characteristics that are so much a part of the experience at Caledonia and Heritage. While golfers rarely discuss the cart ride from hole to hole, take a minute to savor the short jaunt between the eighth green and the ninth tee. The trip through a canopy of oaks is stunning.&nbsp;</p>

<p>– Par 5s often provide a chance to score and the same holds true at Willbrook, but you are going to earn it. The course’s three-shotters all play north of 500 yards, highlighted by the 538-yard 15th, and while It doesn’t require a heroic effort to make par, there isn’t a lot of margin for error.&nbsp;</p>
