MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. | Routing a course isn’t easy. Making every hole streamlined to the one before and after is even harder.
Along South Carolina’s Grand Strand golfing mecca, there are a number of individual spots where, while standing on the tee box, your imagination is stretched. Anomalies are going to present themselves time and again. Pure consistency is next to impossible. It is what make these five holes stand out to Joe Golfer that much more.
They can flow and fit, but they still make the average player think, even when the other 17 holes around them can inspire a theme. It doesn’t make them bad holes. 
In fact, it’s quite the contrary.
ABERDEEN COUNTRY CLUB, WOODLANDS NINE NO. 3 
You can usually get away without much preparation at <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/aberdeen-country-club">Aberdeen’s</a> 27-hole design because sight lines are clear. However, this one is different in that it has a fairway is in the shape of a large snake partially digesting its meal. The Par-5 502-yarder presents a large landing area off the tee before a moderate bend around a large pond on the right and a smaller one up the left closer to the tee. It makes some of even the small number of doglegs here seem direct.
CALEDONIA GOLF &amp; FISH CLUB NO. 9 
The other Par 3s at <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/caledonia-golf-and-fish-club">Caledonia</a> all tee off with players inside their sweet spot, middle-to-high irons that allow for a full swing into the green. No. 9 is different in that those going from the whites are staring at all of 92 yards to the middle of elongated parallel green. The trick here is just making it there. Anything short leaves you in a bear of a waste bunker staring at pin locations that are all over the map.
LONG BAY GOLF CLUB NO. 7 
Jack Nicklaus had a wide-open canvas to lay out <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/long-bay-golf-club">Long Bay</a>. It shows in the straight-line design that flows seamlessly from hole to hole. On No. 7, he used all that space to bend the final yardage of one of his Par 5s around a pond and into a heavily sand-protected green that appears to be a speck on the overhead view. It eliminates any cheats into the green, and often proves to be a challenge for even the most skilled among us.

Players get a bit giddy when they see a sub-250-yard par 4 hole on a scorecard. That is, until they see or hear the words “Hell’s Half Acre”. That’s when it becomes real. It dares you to go after the green with the big dog, only to swallow up many a shots with pot bunkers and a massive waste bunker that all tees need to fly in order to make the center of the green. The next-shortest Par 4 at <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/the-legends-moorland">Moorland</a>? It’s some 90 yards longer.
PAWLEYS PLANTATION GOLF &amp; COUNTRY CLUB NO. 17 
Everyone knows about No. 13 at <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/pawleys-plantation">Pawleys Plantation</a>. But at least that one makes sense because of the marsh locking in the green embankment. A few holes later, the creatively of the layout is, well, interesting. The short hole gives hitters a large parallel approach zone that is basically 75 percent as long as the straight-line shot from tee to pin. It allows you to miss way wide without getting much closer to putting.
