Today, I’m going to give you three steps to good balance and posture in the golf swing. In the first step, you want to be nice and flexed at address, with knees bent like this (in video).
The second step is really important. You want to get your pelvis out (behind you), so what you want to do is take your club, press it against your hips, and use this method to help push your hips back. What that does is it gives you a good spine angle to make a good rotation in the golf swing.
Now, the third step is really important, and it’s about your stance. Often times I see students who have their feet too close together during the swing. You want to make sure that you have a medium stance for your irons, and then for your driver you want to have a nice, wide stance with your feet set up outside your shoulders. And what this does is give you really good balance.
If you have a tendency to lose your balance after impact, whether your feet go forward or you fall back, I want you to try this balance drill. Simply hold one knee up so that your thigh is parallel to the ground, for 30 seconds. Now if you can do that for at least 30 seconds, that’s a good indicator that you have good balance. But if you can’t do that, I want you to really work on widening your stance a little bit. Give your body a little bit more support during the golf swing with your arc.
So those are three easy steps to help improve your balance and posture during the golf swing. Flex those knees, tilt your pelvis and widen your stance a bit, to get you to a better swing that puts you in an athletic position and more stability through impact!
