<p>The Arnold Palmer design &#8211; one of three who call National home &#8211; has gone from intriguing layout to local’s favorite in a relatively small amount of time. Players head down Gardner Lacy Road and turn left onto the property, up to the club house and onto the first tee box feeling comfortable.</p>

<p>When they leave, whether or not they feel great typically depends on four holes in particular. Score well on these Par 4s, and that spine straightens significantly.</p>

<p><strong>NO. 2, 302 YARDS</strong><br>Barring a thinned tree line up the left, you’re not going to be able to see the green. That’s of little consequence because you can see the bunker up the right just inside the cart path. Leave your ball anywhere inside of that bunker and you’re in business to essentially putt your way the rest of the way up this super smooth grass. If the pin is in the back, that’s even better. Now you can take a medium swing with the wedge and get ultra close to putting for birdie.</p>

<p><strong>NO. 7, 365 YARDS</strong><br>Too many players here find pine straw under those tower pines on either side of the fairway. Too few players who find the right edge realize there’s nothing else standing in their way between that less-than-ideal surface and the green. A modicum of a decent punch will avoid the overhang and there’s a solid possibility the ball’s going to roll. The people who don’t get it? They start flirting with bogey before they take their third shot. If you’re not into that, it’s basically two average contacts from tee to green straight down the pipe.</p>

<p><strong>NO. 12, 338 YARDS</strong><br>No biggie, No. 12 is just an 85-degree dogleg with bunkers at both the inside and outside of the elbow. Yeah, that’s not favorable. But neither is attempting to out-think one of the game’s greatest golfers and his design squad. There is no flying the pines in any way, shape or form that makes sense for those of us not getting paid to play this game. Save your heroics for somewhere else. Aim at the furthest bunker with anything but your driver and then pull out the high iron for a makable shot onto the green.</p>

<p><strong>NO. 14, 361 YARDS</strong><br>Ditto. The dogleg up the left is a no-man’s land of garbage you don’t need to account for. What there is, however, is a target bunker that you’re going to again want to get as close to possible without reaching completely. Anywhere within 60 yards of it puts you into the sweet spot of a hole that isn’t necessarily long but trying to force you into the big mistake. Believe us. We’ve done it. And a casual four is much different than a “What-was-I-thinking?” seven of eight. <em>(14th top photo)</em></p>
