MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. | Cadence and flow can be difficult to find on the course. Even more so on one you don’t know.
Taking that into account, it’s easy to see why <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/myrtlewood-golf-club-palmetto">Myrtlewood Golf Club’s Palmetto Course</a> has been such a popular option in the Myrtle Beach area since 1972. Everything about the track &#8211; from its straight-line layout to its packing of its mid-distance holes to turf selection and maintenance &#8211; is built to keep pace of play on point while allowing players to get some much-needed consistency. It’s why visiting golfers laud their package providers for including it, and why others looking to find their swing return.
“I think the course helps the players find a rhythm with the layout of the holes,” Myrtlewood General Manager Dustin Powers said. “The design of having Par 5s close together will help scoring and generate momentum for the golfer. And I believe that not stopping for a turn helps to keep the golfer focused and in rhythm.”
The one-through-18 design at Palmetto is a draw, as it negates the oft-negatively perceived use of double tees during the busy season. But where this course makes it really count is the placement of those longer holes that Powers mentioned.
After opening with four Par 4s and a mid-range Par 3, all of the Par 5s fall between holes six and 13. All four play a hair over 500 yards from the white tees, but all have generous fairways and virtually no threat of an out-of-bounds territory. That means just about anything off the tee, save for the biggest of misses, is playable.

And as Powers also pointed out, gives everyone the opportunity shave off a stroke or two during the middle third of the round. Putting all that together, though, meant finding a way to add some challenge for those who seek it.
“I like how there are quite a few doglegs,” Myrtle Beach resident Tom Cecala said after a recent round. “It brings more clubs into play. If you want to try to cut a corner, you can. If not, you can hit a 3-wood or a long iron. It is exactly what I think this course should be.”
Realizing what it could be took a little bit of work. Over the summer of 2019, the staff went to work renovating its most of the 54 bunkers. There was also a significant drainage project. The most noticeable change, however, came with the replacement and refurbishment of all 18 greens. Sunday Bermudagrass was installed, and the putting surfaces were extended closer to their original size. “The greens are excellent,” Cecala said. “They roll true, and they receive the ball well from the fairway. It’s a big improvement to the greens.”
Said Powers: “The response has been overwhelmingly positive.” Having those in place has put a perfect bow on the overall playability. And only added to the rhythm that can be found at <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/myrtlewood-golf-club-palmetto">Palmetto</a>.
