MURRELLS INLET, S.C. | The wait is nearly over. More than two years after the NCAA originally awarded one of the six NCAA Division-I golf regionals for 2019 to the Myrtle Beach area and <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/tournament-player-club">TPC of Myrtle Beach</a>, the tournament is upon us. Between May 12-15, some of the best collegiate teams in the country will be vying for a berth in the national championship to follow later in the month. There will be storylines galore, plenty of drama and more than enough entertainment to hold over fans before and after rounds. We’ve put together a quick tutorial for those planning on attending and seeing the next crop of potential professional stars.
ABOUT THE COURSE:
Tom Fazio’s design at <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/tournament-player-club">TPC Myrtle Beach</a> was constructed with high-level tournaments in mind. It hosted the 2000 Senior PGA Tour Championship and has been a home site for various groups over the years looking to match the TPC name with Fazio’s abilities. It was also a building block for current World Golf Ranking No. 1 Dustin Johnson. Formerly of nearby Coastal Carolina University before his standout professional career began, Johnson and the rest of the Chanticleers played tournaments there and typically used it for practice rounds and training. After Johnson turned pro, he parked his golf school there and hosts the annual <a href="https://worldjuniorgolfchampionship.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dustin Johnson World Junior Golf Championship</a> on site.
WHAT’S AT STAKE:
TPC will serve as one of the six regional sites nationwide, joining Pullman, Wash., Stanford, Calif., Simpsonville, Ky., Athens, Ga., and Austin, Texas. Each will host a 54-hole tournament, with the five best advancing to the national finals May 24-29 in Fayetteville, Ark. A minimum of 13 teams (along with some individual qualifiers) will arrive at TPC with hopes of advancing. A total of 81 teams and 45 individuals will be announced the first week of May(see Myrtle Beach Regional teams below), along with their respective sites for competition. Regardless of who is assigned where, we’d instruct unbiased observers to pay attention to what’s in front of them. A year ago this time, Oklahoma State’s Viktor Hovland was ramping up a run for that ages that ultimately led the Cowboys to the 2018 NCAA Division I championship. He also won the U.S. Amateur title and became the top amateur in the world. In the past month alone, he was the low amateur at the Master’s (you may remember him sitting to Tigers Woods’ right in the post-round interview on CBS) and immediately turned around to steer Oklahoma State to another Big 12 Championship.<img decoding="async" alt="NCAA Regionals TPC Myrtle Beach" src="/media/images/NCAA_Regionals_Creative.PNG" style="width: 385px;float: right;height: 201px" />
COMPETITION BREEDS COMPETITION:
You’d have to be a lemming to not watch the caliber of golf that will be taking place over those three days at <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/tournament-player-club">TPC</a> and not want to get into the action yourself. Lucky for you, several courses are within a quick drive of <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/tournament-player-club">TPC</a> (don’t bother trying to book a tee time there that week, May 12-15). We’re not immune to the fact that your day(s) may be tied down in either the morning or afternoon, so we wanted to give you three nearby options where getting on and off is a major draw. Just a few blocks away stands <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/international-golf-club">International Club of Myrtle Beach</a>, a William Byrd design that opened in 2000 and recently renovated its greens. Go a few blocks more, and Gary Player’s <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/blackmoor-golf-club">Blackmoor</a> layout will give you reason to try out some new looks from various vantage points and clubs. And go a tad more to the north, and <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/indian-wells-golf-club">Indian Wells</a> will provide you the type of course that Gene Hamm knew would succeed in Myrtle Beach for decades to come.

The Myrtle Beach Regional field is headlined by fourth-ranked Wake Forest and No. 8 California. Completing the Myrtle Beach Regional field (Sagrin ranking in parenthesis) are: Texas Tech (No. 18), Illinois (No. 23), Florida State (No. 25), UNLV (No. 34), Oregon (No. 35), Ohio State (No. 52), Northwestern (No. 54), Oregon State (No. 62), Cal State Fullerton (No. 67), Middle Tennessee State (No. 110), VCU (No. 134) and Robert Morris (No. 259).
