PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. | The sandy monster down south is turning heads again.
Founders Club of Pawleys Island, the course built upon a former layout, is nearing the midway point of its second decade of operation. And the Thomas Walker design should be appreciated for its originality.
Walker’s overhaul circled the wagons around bunker complexes so rarely seen elsewhere. Massive waste areas define so many of the holes. But that’s not all.
With the help of PGA Head Golf Professional Tom Vanhoogen, we broke down what makes four holes at Founders Club stand out. Circle these in advance and enjoy everything about them.

HOLE NO. 3, PAR 3, 175 YARDS (top photo)
The elevated tee boxes give players a crisp look over the top of the large pond cutting this hole in two. You’ll appreciate that given the relatively slender and diagonal green you’re shooting for. Go short, and you’re looking for the drop zone. Fly the putting surface and you’re going to be chipping off either mounded terrain or one of the four backside bunkers.

First timers have no clue how challenging the final hole of the front nine is until they’re into their second and third shots. Yes, there is a wide landing area for the tee shot. But from there, all hell breaks loose. The back half of the fairway is squeezed between water up the left side and a huge waste bunker up the right. It makes reaching the green in regulation very difficult.

Put on your big golfer pants and get ready for this one. The mounds and bunkers you’re spotting from the tee are more influential than you can imagine. They split the fairway in half, and you’re going to want to be on the right side if at all possible. Your second (or possibly third) shot will likely be a layup in front of the water protecting another lengthy and slim green.

The most articulated dogleg on the course is otherwise a perfect microcosm of the other 17 holes. Waste bunkers ride both side of the fairway from start to finish. They connect in the form of a carry into the green. As basic as this sounds, ensure that you’re keeping your ball on the greenest grass you can see.
