<p>The <a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/myrtlewood-golf-club-palmetto">Palmetto Course at Myrtlewood Golf Club</a> is best known for its finish along the Intracoastal Waterway and the convenience of its location in the heart of Myrtle Beach. But Edmund Alt’s design has stood the test of time for reasons that go beyond beauty and accessibility.</p>

<p>Palmetto is an out-and-back layout, meaning it doesn’t return to the clubhouse at the turn, and it has a well-earned reputation for being player-friendly. Still, the course has plenty of bite. Many golfers default to the white tees, which stretch to a stout 6,516 yards, and while there are scoring opportunities, a few holes can quickly derail your round. Here are three of them:</p>

<p><strong>No. 5, Par 4, 389 yards (white tees)</strong><br>This dogleg left offers plenty of landing room off the tee, but players who can hit a long draw are rewarded with a much shorter approach. A tee shot that drifts right leaves a longer second into a green protected by three bunkers. Big numbers are rare here, but par is never easy.</p>

<p><strong>No. 14, Par 4, 366 yards</strong><br>The scorecard says the 15th is longer and tougher, but the 14th might be Palmetto’s most dangerous hole. It isn’t long, but the farther you hit your tee shot, the more water encroaches on the right. Out of bounds guards the left, eliminating the safe bailout, and the elevated, two-tiered green only adds to the challenge. <em>(top photo)</em></p>

<p><strong>No. 15, Par 4, 419 yards</strong><br>Palmetto’s longest par 4 plays along the opposite side of the same water hazard that lurks on No. 14. There’s plenty of fairway to the left, but even a good drive leaves the round’s longest approach shot to a green nearly 50 yards deep. Fortunately, there are no bunkers, but the hole remains a daunting test.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/myrtlewood-golf-club-palmetto">Palmetto</a> may be more challenging than its sister course, <a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/myrtlewood-golf-club-pinehills">PineHills</a>, but it won’t overwhelm players. Just make sure holes 5, 14, and 15 have your full attention if you want to post a low score.</p>
