<p>But in reality, the differences are stark. An easy golf course doesn’t present many challenges &#8211; from forced carries to crucial green side bunker placement to blind tee shots. While the forgiving one begs you to take those challenges head on, an ode to the way this game is often supposed to be played.</p>

<p>Up and down South Carolina’s Grand Strand, we’re pinpointing five courses that below to the forgiving category. Each of these dole out difficulties in small doses, of course, but they don’t drop the hammer on players trying out something new.</p>

<p><strong><a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/myrtle-beach-national-west-course">MYRTLE BEACH NATIONAL WEST COURSE</a></strong><br>The “everyday” option at National, West opens up with three of holes lined by trees on at least one side, if not both. The optimal shot is down the middle of the fairways, but we understand “optimal” isn’t always the case. That’s where the second half of the equation comes in. While no one wants to doink a ball off the hardwoods, the landing areas under those trees aren’t all doom or gloom. In fact, even on the Par 5 first or quirkier holes like the dogleg on No. 12, it’s entirely possible to have your tee shots land in the pine straw and still very much save par. </p>

<p><strong><a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/founders-club">FOUNDERS CLUB</a></strong><br>Everyone hates the sand. It’s a crap shoot hitting out of it, and even when you succeed in doing so, that itchy powder seems to be so embedding in your shoes you’re vacuuming it out of your car’s floor mats for months after the fact. So why in God’s name would we direct you to a course with more of it than anywhere else? Therein lies the beauty of Founders Club. This extreme waste-bunker of a course requires maybe the worst shot of your year to require a drop. The two biggest exceptions to the rule are Nos. 8 and 9, where water is prevalent up the left side. We can’t help you much there. But otherwise, it’s not infrequent to play an entire round here with a single ball or two.</p>

<p><strong><a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/burning-ridge-golf-club">BURNING RIDGE GOLF CLUB</a></strong><br>Gene Hamm’s entire design philosophy was based around appeasing the everyday golfer, not the single-digit handicappers among us. As such, what meets the eye isn’t always what players encounter between shots. The fairways are larger than they appear. The distance to the greens is often less than what it feels like. And the challenge to the course is based entirely upon those visual tricks, not the actual design. The reality of the situation is that errant shots are often retrievable, if not in your strike comfort zone. It makes catching and then holding onto your rhythm that much easier.</p>

<p><strong><a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/myrtlewood-golf-club-palmetto">PALMETTO COURSE AT MYRTLEWOOD</a></strong><br>Amid an area that has found a love for renovating greens, Palmetto was among the first to truly benefit from the wide-scale project. Not only were those putting surfaces improved in terms of the truth of your putt lines, they were also expanded back out to their original size. What that meant in real time was an ability to attack second or third shots with a confidence that hadn’t been around at Myrtlewood for at least the last two decades. Are there problem areas on the course where players can get caught off guard? Of course. But reducing those on the back half of every single hole puts Palmetto on a super short list of tracks capable of earning a forgiving title. <em>(Palmetto 15th hole top photo)</em></p>

<p><strong><a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/tradition-golf-club">TRADITION GOLF CLUB</a></strong><br>We want you to zoom ahead to No. 4, where Tradition’s first Par 5 of the day rears its head. On this 510-yarder (540 from the tips, 483 from the forwards) players are sort of reverse-baited into doing something silly. It’s every bit of a three-shot hole to reach the green, but in setting up in that fashion &#8211; primarily because of the green’s placement behind a left side pond &#8211; it’s almost impossible to chunk your ball into oblivion. The first two shots are straight as an arrow. This isn’t simply one example of part of your round at Tradition; it’s the microcosm of the entire course.</p>
