More than 40 years after <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/burning-ridge-golf-club">Burning Ridge Golf Club</a> opened its doors, the course has grown into a new dynamic.
Gone are the days of 36 holes, when it was split between two courses. Since 2005 &#8211; when it scaled back to 18 holes in lieu of development &#8211; Burning Ridge has helped anchor the eastern edge of Conway. There, alongside a few other properties, locals in the ever-growing Carolina Forest zone have a reliable option that serves a huge chunk of the locals market.
Burning Ridge is a true everyday course, one where players can score well and make the most of what famed architect Gene Hamm had in mind. The 6,216 yards of distance here can be  navigated relatively easily. Excellent sight lines cut down on surprises while well-placed hazards and bunkering provide just enough of a challenge.
Thanks to package play and increased exposure, though, Burning Ridge has also turned into a consistent play for out-of-town visitors. If necessary, it can be considered a nice warm-up round on Day 1 or an easy going final go before heading out of town.
All the while, we love these three holes and their placement.
NO. 1, PAR 5 546 YARDS 
Hamm cranked things up right away with his opener, greeting players with longest hole of the entire round. While we gave the distances from the whites, consider that even the seniors tees play at 522 yards.<img decoding="async" alt="Burning Ridge 1st Hole" src="/media/images/BR_1.png" style="width: 150px;height: 150px;float: right" /> The give-and-take here is that there is a boatload of room off the tee. The lone problem area early is a a reachable fairway bunker up the right side that returning players know to use as a target. Fly that bunker, and then the real fun begins.
After that, the choice of what to do next gets interesting. The pond cutting off the approach from the rest of the fairway isn’t an easy carry. So, will you lay up or see if you had enough protein for breakfast? (1st hole pictured right)
No. 12, PAR 3, 200 YARDS 
One of the best advantages Hamm had at his disposal was that the original layout had the advantage of land. He could experiment on holes like the 200-yard Par 3 at No. 12. 
The ultra-long “short” hole requires players to carry the water that splits the tees and green and then wraps around the right side of the putting surface. The front-side trap gets raked hourly, as the not-quite crowd discovers that at least it’s better than a drop. Either way, a tee shot requiring a full swing with a mid to long iron can get your blood pumping. (12th hole top photo)
No. 16, PAR 4, 346 YARDS 
This is a quintessential Hamm hole. The relatively short Par 4 is meant to be a make-or-break scenario for your round. It’s all about how you approach the two fairway bunkers up the right and the slightly off-<img decoding="async" alt="Burning Ridge 16th Hole" src="/media/images/BR16.png" style="width: 150px;height: 150px;float: right" />center green placement.
There’s water and a back-side bunker, as well, but those are mostly for show and have no real impact on the actual playability here. Hamm’s hope was that players could focus away from those and get down to business. Those who do find themselves flirting with an easy par or even a birdie. (16th hole pictured right)
