<p><em>As the year nears its conclusion, we are reflecting on the biggest Myrtle Beach golf stories of the past 12 months. This was an exceptionally busy year along the Grand Strand and here is a look back at the area’s fourth biggest story.</em></p>

<p>New ownership took over Sea Trail Resort, a 54-hole property just across that state line in Sunset Beach, N.C., nearly two years ago, and the impact of the change became readily apparent to golfers in 2024.</p>

<p>Sure, the renovated clubhouse for the Byrd and Jones courses is nice, and the additions of Sunset Prime, a steakhouse, and 55 Bistro Bar &amp; Grill are pretty sweet, but golfers care most about the courses they play, and that’s where Sea Trail made its biggest splash in 2024.</p>

<p>The Willard Byrd course was closed over the summer as architect Tim Cate, who designed Thistle and Tiger’s Eye, among others, led a substantial renovation effort. Cate, working alongside Stephen Donahue, Sea Trail’s director of agronomy, installed new TifEagle Bermudagrass greens and overhauled the course’s bunkers, an effort highlighted by the installation of the Better Billy Bunker system to improve drainage.</p>

<p>Some traps were removed while Cate installed waste bunkers on select holes to improve the strategic design and improve maintenance.</p>

<p>The project, which also included tree removal, bridge repairs, cart path reconstruction, and landscape improvements, has provided a refreshed look and an improved experience on a course that opened in 1990.</p>

<p>While the renovation of the <a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/sea-trail-resort-byrd-course">Byrd Course</a> is complete, it’s much closer to the beginning of Sea Trail’s makeover than the end. The Rees Jones and Dan Maples courses will enjoy similar renovations in the near future as Sea Trail cements its place as the premier stay-and-play destination in golf-rich Brunswick County, N.C.</p>

<p>Throw in plans for an onsite hotel in the coming years and Sea Trail may become a regular on our year-end list of the Myrtle Beach area’s biggest stories.</p>
