MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. | A few weeks back, I was paired up with a couple of part-time locals at an area course.
We chatted about all things golf for four hours. And, when they found out about this gig, they started prodding me on nearby tracks. That’s when one of them brought up <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/world-tour-golf-links">World Tour Golf Links.</a>
The replica course is just a tick past two decades old, and even those who’ve spent a few years along the Grand Strand know its reputation well. You’re going to get glimpses of some of the biggest-named courses in the world.
But, for better or worse, some people just don’t see it. They can’t connect the dots to the likes of Augusta National or St. Andrews or Winged Foot &#8211; whether they were lucky enough to actually play the originals or simply watched them on television some Sunday afternoon.
It leaves a negative connotation, one my playing partners described that day not all that long ago.
I countered with something they didn’t expect.
“Have you tried playing it without thinking about the originals?”
Their facial reactions were predictable, because they were the exact ones I had when it dawned on me. Even if you don’t like the replica idea, even if you feel like it’s a promotional tool to garner play from tourists, the product at World Tour speaks for itself.<img decoding="async" alt="World Tour Golf Links Amen Corner" src="/media/images/Amen_corner.png" style="width: 300px;height: 244px;float: right" />
Especially recently, the staff has put forward an impeccable product, one that if you were to eliminate the ties to those aforementioned courses or any of the others utilized, it would be the type of track that would turn heads.
Why does all that matter now?
Well, I’m about to practice what I preached. These are the “wow” holes at <a href="http://www.mbn.com/courses/world-tour-golf-links">World Tour</a> that will blow you away, regardless of your opinion of replicas.
In their current states, they’re just awesome holes.
(AUTHOR’S NOTE: I’m purposefully not attaching the original course or hole number here. Without cheating, see if you can guess it. Or don’t &#8211; and just enjoy.)
BOMBS AWAY
The vast majority of players throughout the course of the year (when double-teeing doesn’t force the club’s hand) are going to start on the Open 9. And that means a grip-it-and-rip it hole right off the bat. 
No. 1 here is massively wide fairway (shared with the Open’s final hole) where anything but a massive slice for righties is still in play. Drop it anywhere else, and you’re going to have an opportunity to fly a sliver stream cutting off the green from the fairway into an oversized putting surface ready for you to start your day with a well-earned par.
ISLAND IN THE SUN
Just how comfortable are you with your sand wedge?
You’re about the find out bright and early. On the Open No. 3, the course presents a beaut of an island Par 3 that is going to play a mere 115 yards from the white tees. So many golf balls plunk down here that divers used to fight for the rights to do their thing. Missing the green isn’t an option.
However, it also but guarantees a par for anyone who doesn’t absolutely stink with the putter or need a drop.

The Championship Nine’s fifth hole is a diabolical Par 3 meant to tick you off. There is a wide stream in front you’ll have to carry. If that’s not enough, there is also an east-west bunker between that and the green.
And if you go long? Two more smaller sand traps you want no business trying to hit out of. Since the green is also wide but not deep, that’s easier said than done. It’s 142 yards from the white tees to the center of the green. So, you know, don’t miss.
MAKE IT COUNT
Want to feel like a pro? Birdie No. 9 on the Championship 9 and you’ll have succeeded, at least for a few minutes.
The fairway looks humongous from the tee box, only to play its hand with a pond up the left side that crimps it down in a big hurry. If you stay in the middle, you’re good to go, but go right and you’re messing with a couple sizable traps. That’s only the beginning.
From there, another pond up the right turns the final 100 yards a slender landing strip onto a tiny helipad. Use some Tour discipline, then, and get the most of this sucker.
