MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. | If there has been a noticeable problem in everyday golf over the years, it has been a branding issue that paints us all into a corner.
Players of different abilities play better tracks, while other tee it up on others. More often than not, it’s based upon the starting blocks. Now, look around at how many courses have added tee boxes over the years.
Therein lies the solution &#8211; and one that has served a great advantage for those of different skill sets &#8211; one buddy who plays all the time with another who does so rarely, parents and children and, yes, couples.
Ladies tees (for the women who elect to use them) have been relatively stagnant. However, getting more diversity in the ones behind them have alleviated some of the stress with finding the right course for unmatched abilities.
This Valentine’s Day, tee it up with confidence at one of these four tracks.

The Granddaddy’s four sets of tees may not seem out of the ordinary, but they’re magnified by the fact that the course plays a max distance of 6,675 yards and is a Par-70 design. The dual Par-35 nines get away with it nicely but shaving off nearly 400 yards from the back tees to the No. 3s, and then another 550 or so if you jump up to the No. 2s. That gives the guys some serious flexibility to keep the better half from seeing your frustration.

Yes, Grande Dunes has six sets of tees. But for the vast majority of us, let’s just pretend it’s more like four. The Championship golds are set at an eye-popping 7,618 yards. Even the blacks are playing from just shy of 7,200 yards. So, just forget about those and concentrate on the blues (6,737), whites (6,272) or silvers (5,900) and snuggle up in the cart between holes just a few moments longer.

Willbrook was ago anointed as one of the area’s best courses for women. What they left out of that one is that it also leaves the unsuspecting guys in the tandem frequently scratching their heads, even from the standard whites (6,292 yards). Thankfully, the intermediary golds are a much more manageable 5,829 yards and can prevent embarrassing questions about how you’re not getting better despite all those rounds

Like Grande Dunes, River Hills presents six sets of tees. And even if you discount the outliers &#8211; juniors at 4,414 or the Teals 6,923 &#8211; there are still five truly in play for the vast majority of players. What’s more, the team-themed tee boxes get past much of the status quo from the old days of golf that assigned some of that machismo to the game. So, don your Gamecock, Tiger, Chanticleer, North Carolina or Panthers gear and go to work.
