We’re not sure why type of golf ball Anthony Quezada is using, but his approach to “Big Break &#8211; Myrtle Beach” is tailor-made for the Golf Channel’s reality competition.
Quezada was the focal point of yet another episode, as he was went from narrowly avoiding being included in the final elimination challenge of the fourth episode to being in the thick of it. All the while, he was openly rooted against by the other contestants after continually poking them with a rusty nine-iron.
The 19-year-old Phoenix native put up once again, though, saving his best play during a one-on-one elimination challenge against Dave Markle. Like he did in eliminating Krista Puisite in episode two on the Barefoot Resort Fazio Course, he topped Markle in a two-hole stroke match at the resort’s semi-private Dye Club in Myrtle Beach.
His up and down style was present in a matter of shots, where he drove his opening shot of the final challenge into a waste bunker only to chip in from 30 yards out moments later.
“It’s not talking anymore,” Quezada said on the broadcast after staving off a trip home.
Said Markle: “I wanted to play him, and I wanted to beat him.”
As for the rest of the show, it opened on Dye Club’s No. 6, a short par 3 lined on the right by water and on the left by heavy banking (protecting the No. 7 tee box). Two five-player teams &#8211; captained by Katy Harris and Toph Peterson &#8211; took turns in a closest-to-the-pin in which Team Katy eventually locked in their berths to the next episode.
From there, the five members of Team Toph took to a new kind of challenge, where they had to hit successive shots onto a fairway measuring between 50-150 yards while hitting each stroke longer than the other. Quezada led off by hitting nine straight, only to be tied by Peterson, who was last. Peterson then took himself out of the elimination mix on a one-shot playoff.
TUESDAY’S BIG WINNER: Be it an added chance at the final four or pocketing a five-figure payday by holding on to it, Charlie Harrison’s Super Immunity earned during the season premier wasn’t even tested yet again.
Harrison was part of Team Katy during the initial closest-to-the-pin competition. As such he was part of half the remaining contestants automatically removed from the chopping block. Instead of worrying about what he would do, he was busy sitting in the makeshift Macanudo lounge at Barefoot Resort for much of the fourth episode.
DOWN TO NINE: Markle’s back-to-back poor showings cost him this time. After all, it was only one episode back that he hit his ball into the flop wall and then finished in the middle of the pack in back-to-back competitions and was a players’ choice away from playing in the final elimination.
He won’t exactly leave empty handed. He did claim a $2,500 cash prize on the second episode.
The five-year PGA Tour Canada and mini-circuit veteran is expected to be back on those again in 2015.
