MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. | It takes something truly special to be the best of the best. There’s no shortage of options for what we’d consider to be the top finishing holes among all our options up and down South Carolina’s northern coastline. We had so much to look at.
But when it came down to the nitty, the gritty and everything on either side, these five give us all something to think back on with fond memories of a day on the links.

The 18th hole and the memories it delves out are a big reason why Caledonia always ends up among the highest-rated courses in the area. Almost every golfer to plays the track is going to be shooting for the green on the second shot, and that means flying a huge pond that frames the final yardage in a way to make you thank your lucky stars. Pete and P.B. Dye elected to put a no-holds-barred sand bunker up the left side near the green because they knew just about everyone would be aiming that direction coming into the final stretch as a way to avoid the huge pond running all the way up the right. Try to avoid it, obviously, but take in everything this hole has to offer along the way.

The 400 yards (even, if you’re curious) to traverse at this ultra-original layout by area standards includes a mostly sliver stream, an 80-degree dogleg and a Y-shaped bunker at the turn. You’re also going to find next to no room for error in terms of fairway grass in the final half of the hole and a tiny green that makes you appreciate any semblance of touch in your golf game.

We love everything about this final hole at TPC, even if it kicks our tails more often than not. From the uphill feel from the tee, the split fairway divided by thick rough grass, the tree line up the right, the massive amount of water (with a frequent alligator visitor) up the left or the clear look at the clubhouse, you’re going to feel that way about the Par 5, too.

Ron Garl’s sole Grand Strand layout put its best foot forward at the last possible moment. Everyone is going to concentrate on the waste bunker up the left that chews up nearly all of the distance between tee and green. It helps framed a beautifully tree-framed hole that takes you miles away from the hustle and bustle of real life and allows you to appreciate the game.
