<p>While the beauty and convenience of Palmetto garner a lot of attention, don’t forget: the Edmund Alt design is a very good one. One of the few Myrtle Beach courses that doesn’t turn at the clubhouse, golfers enjoy the opportunity to tee off throughout the day at Palmetto.</p>

<p>But what can they expect from the layout (other than the stunning view of the Intracoastal on the par 4 18th)? Here are five tips to help prepare you for a round at Palmetto.</p>

<p>● Let’s start with a simple one: pay attention to the scorecard. Most golfers default to playing from the white tees, but they are a meaty 6,516 yards. The golds are a more manageable 6,009 yards, but many of us mindlessly tee it up from the whites, which is okay, if you can handle the distance. Play from the set of tees best suited to your game.</p>

<p>● If you drive the ball well, you should score well. The fairways are generous and there is little OB to speak of, so you should feel comfortable swinging the big stick, but there are a few exceptions. Beware of the dogleg left, par 5 sixth hole; long hitters can drive the ball through the fairway and into water you don’t see off the tee. Additionally, approach the 366-yard 14th hole with caution because anything to the right-center of the fairway will bring trouble into play. Otherwise, swing away.</p>

<p>● The par 3s on the Palmetto are demanding. Three of the four one-shotters play at least 162 yards (all distances from white tees), including the 190-yard 11th. The shortest &#8211; the 153-yard seventh &#8211; features water that runs up to the edge of the green. You will need to be striping your irons on these par 3s, lest trouble awaits.</p>

<p>● The 12th hole is the easiest on the course, according to the USGA, as the par 4 plays just 345 yards, but the challenge is dicier than the scorecard suggests. To take the water on the right out of play, your tee ball needs to favor the left center of the fairway, meaning the approach shot will be over a large bunker to a green that is running away from you. I’m not making the case that No. 12 is hard, but don’t assume it’s an easy par either.</p>

<p>● Palmetto’s finish is great. The 17th is a downhill par 3 over water, offering a view of the Intracoastal, and the 18th plays along the waterway from tee to green. The tee shot on 17 is arguably the day’s most delicate, playing to a green that is relatively narrow, and the 18th offers a chance at birdie with a good drive while you snap pictures between swings.</p>
