<p>For all of the rounds I’ve played in Myrtle Beach, for all the times I’ve been fortunate enough to meet new men and women and share 18 holes with, that one time at <u><a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/tradition-golf-club">Tradition Golf Club</a></u> will always stand out among the most memorable.</p>

<p>The message from the starter made me feel like royalty.</p>

<p>I was being shoved out first thing in the morning as a single, some 12-14 minutes before the next group would be ready, and catching up with the mowers wasn’t a question of if, but when.</p>

<p>Tradition and I bonded that day. We got to know each other plenty &#8211; often both sides of a fairway (or beyond) simultaneously. The green ball I was playing with often outplayed the white one, and vice versa. Gave myself a few reasons for fist pumps. Gave the course plenty of reasons to laugh at me. Took a few selfies of the two of us. You know, like friends do.</p>

<p>What I also learned about <u><a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/tradition-golf-club">Tradition</a></u> was the parts of it that made our friendship stick in the rounds since. Three beautiful and well thought out holes that put all the reasons this game is fun into my memory bank. Although there were some relatively great shots that day &#8211; hey, I did have an extra whack at it, it’s not that surprising &#8211; for the most part, it had little to do with my actual play.</p>

<p>No, these three are gems that deserved to be enjoyed by all.</p>

<p><strong>NO. 3, 300 YARDS, PAR 4 </strong><em>(pictured right)</em><br>You remember when Uncle Rico asks Napoleon Dynamite “How much you wanna make a bet I can throw a football over them mountains?” He sounded ridiculous, just as you would by telling your playing partner that you could carry the tree embedded in the waste bunker up the right side into the green.</p>

<p>For as much as scorebooks don’t always provide an accurate description of a hole due to time or artist renderings or whatever else, this one is just about spot on. Ron Garl added in a nice, short Par 4 into the opening three holes here, but considering that most average players don’t need a driver to get it where they need it to be, you might as well add another 50 yards to what you’re thinking.</p>

<p>This is the signal hole if there ever was one. Garl wasn’t going for brawn. Better get used to it.</p>

<p><strong>NO. 10, 520 YARDS, PAR 5 </strong><em>(top photo)</em><br>One of those classic holes both framed and defined by the massive waste bunker up the left and the dog leg around it, No. 10 is the longest on the day from the whites. Players are going to feel every bit of the 520 yards, even if they can somehow shave a few off with a perfectly placed drive.</p>

<p>But even with that being the case, the smart play on the back-side opener is to not bit off more than you can chew. As tempting as this one is, the more I play it, the more I understand that my chances of staying out of that bunker coincide with my chances of par. Because what most folks won’t quite get until it’s too late is that the final 80 yards &#8211; if you’re opposite the bunker on the right side of the fairway &#8211; is that the short grass means you could punch up right to the stick.</p>

<p>Despite a boatload of water around this peninsula green. Despite two big sand traps on the peninsula. Despite no backstop to help your depth perception. Despite the tree that is only there to help protect the green’s Sunday Bermudagrass from the sun during certain portions of the day.</p>

<p>No “island” green in the history of golf may have more birdie putts than this one. Sure, some of them are from a country mile away. But that’s not the point. Players who miss the flag by as much as 30 or more feet are still putting, even when it rolls to the fringe. Considering that the flag is almost not in competition position (translation: close to dead center), that distance is usually much, much less.</p>
