MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. | Sometimes, you just want a super-fair par 3 that doesn’t leave much chance for doubling up on the scorecard. Thankfully, there are some good ones along the Grand Strand golfing mecca. Some get you up and down by allowing for a full swing at the green. Some disguise easier shots with beautification schemes that don’t really affect play. And yet others give you a green so big it’s quite frankly tough to miss. Sandwiched between tougher holes, these five are a pleasant surprise during a round.
<a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/arrowhead-country-club">ARROWHEAD COUNTRY CLUB</a>, LAKES NO. 5
Of <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/arrowhead-country-club">Arrowhead’s</a> six par 3s, this one is by far the shortest (the others are all north of 170 yards from the whites). But the 116 yards from tee to the middle of the green on the Lakes Nine No. 5 is not even the biggest benefit to you. The wide target area provides some wiggle room right or left while still leaving you putting for birdie. And barring a massive overswing that pushes you into three backside bunkers or into the trees, you’re still in pretty good shape.

The longest of the five par 3s listed here, this one falls in the middle third of the round, when most players have found their sweet spot without starting to tire. What is that important? Because with 183 yards from the whites, you’re going to want to feel nice and stretched out to attack the green. If you’re able to keep your flight straight, going short won’t kill the hole, either. A large approach zone leads up to the green.

When Ron Garl laid out <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/tradition-golf-club">Tradition</a>, he minimized the impact of water while letting it accent holes abound. The second hole is a fine example. Even for those playing the back, it would take a hell of a hook or slice to find the pond up the left-hand side. What’s more, it is further protected by a large start-to-finish, beach-style waste bunker. Most importantly, there is a direct path from four of the five tee boxes to the circular green.

Downhill par 3s can be a bit tricky, especially if the wind is blowing. But we have become big fans of this one at <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/true-blue">True Blue</a> because of how forgiving it is at the same time. If you land in the 120-yard-long waste bunker between the tees and front edge of the green, you’ve got good stuff to hit out of. If you miss front left, it’s a fairway-style catch area that can be punched up to the green. And if you avoid those, you’re almost assuredly putting.

We love this tree-bordered hole at <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/wild-wing-plantation-avocet">Wild Wing’s Avocet </a>course because it is framed so brilliantly, not only by the towering pines, but also by a small left-side pond and the right-side cart path. The 145 yards here are also enough to let players take a half or 3/4 swing after clubbing up or a full pop with a lesser option. Trial and error can pay dividends, of course, but there is a reason so many holes-in-one have been recorded here.
