MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. | The fastest way from Point A to Point B is a straight line. Except when that isn’t an option. Amid the nearly 2000 or so golf holes along South Carolina’s Grand Strand, five specific ones have proved just how tricky a well-designed dogleg can be. The bend on each of the following holes is at least 75 degrees. More importantly, they’re accompanied by the type of hazards that make them seem even more daunting.
 
BAREFOOT RESORT AND GOLF FAZIO NO. 14
Distractions run rampant on <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/fazio-at-barefoot-resort">Tom Fazio’s namesake at Barefoot</a>, and maybe no more so than on the 14th hole. A marsh carry off the tee leads into a misshapen fairway that looks much more inviting than it really is. Mainly, it all comes down to the final third of the hole, where the dogleg left comes into play. Getting into position to reach the green is easier said than done because the fairway slims to the point of elimination. 
 
MYRTLE BEACH NATIONAL KING’S NORTH NO. 13
Appropriately routed, the thirteenth hole at Arnold Palmer’s <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/myrtle-beach-national-kings-north">King’s North</a> track presents anything but luck, although a bit of it will go a long way. The dogleg itself isn’t overbearing. However, two large waste bunkers &#8211; one on the bend and another front and right of the green &#8211; three smaller traps and a number of cleverly remaining pines squeeze players from start to finish on this 379-yard par 4.

Among the evil ways <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/pawleys-plantation">Jack Nicklaus toyed with us here</a>, No. 16 doesn’t jump off the yardage book until you get there. That’s because on this 405-yarder, anything less than a perfect (and long) tee shot leads players to at least one lay-up. The 80-degree turn to the left is difficult because failure to go wide enough brings the marsh on the right into play on the punch. Go too wide, and any chance at reaching the green in two means flying that same marsh.
 
RIVER HILLS GOLF &amp; COUNTRY CLUB NO. 2
As far as true doglegs go, few can touch the full turn that <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/river-hills-golf-club">River Hills’ </a>second hole does. Minus the smallest opportunity to cut the corner (not recommended for anyone but the biggest hitters), the dogleg right actually bends more than 90 degrees. On a shorter hole, that may not matter much. However, this one chimes in at 497 yards from the whites and even a stout 430 yards from the ladies tees.
 
TRUE BLUE GOLF CLUB NO. 10
Want to know how to design a fierce dogleg without loading up on trees? Take a look at Mike Strantz’s 10th hole at <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/true-blue">True Blue</a>. This one stretches as far as 599 yards and breaks hard right around a massive waste bunker. That sand eliminates the chances to snip off some of the distance. That’s not all. That bunker thrusts itself into the fairway at the halfway point of the hole. Get through that trouble, and there is still a natural grass area to carry in front of the green.
