<p>The arrival of the Masters is the unofficial start of the spring golf season in America. It’s the game’s most anticipated tournament and with the weather beginning to warm across the nation, golfers are knocking the dust off their clubs and returning to the links.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It’s also a time when the Grand Strand’s ties to the Masters move to the forefront. While most people immediately think of World Tour and the four holes that replicate Augusta National, including Amen Corner, the Grand Strand is also home to nine layouts designed by five Masters winners.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Raymond Floyd and Fred Couples all have Myrtle Beach golf courses to their credit. If you are considering a trip that features the Masters winners of Myrtle Beach, here are the five most memorable holes designed by men who have slipped on that coveted green jacket.&nbsp;</p>

<p>– Palmer might be golf’s most beloved player and with four area courses on his resume, “The King” is the Grand Strand’s most prolific Masters winner. Arnie designed several holes at <u><a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/river-edge">Rivers Edge</a></u> that could be deemed his most memorable &#8211; including the unforgettable par 5 ninth &#8211; but the obvious answer here is the par 5 sixth hole at <u><a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/myrtle-beach-national-kings-north">King’s North</a></u>, otherwise known as “The Gambler.” Home to an alternate island fairway, “The Gambler” is one of Myrtle Beach’s most recognizable challenges.<em>(pictured right)</em></p>

<p>– Nicklaus is golf’s greatest champion, having won 18 major titles, including six green jackets, and he has designed a pair of Myrtle Beach golf courses &#8211; <u><a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/long-bay-golf-club">Long Bay Club</a></u> and <u><a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/pawleys-plantation">Pawleys Plantation</a></u>. Long Bay has three of the area’s top 100 holes, according to the Sun News, but Pawleys is home to the Golden Bear’s most famous local hole &#8211; the devilish, par 3 13th. From the white tees, No. 13 typically plays less than 100 yards but golfers are forced to hit a narrow, peninsula green that is exposed to wind coming off the nearby Atlantic Ocean. It’s an unforgettable challenge.&nbsp;</p>

<p>– Masters champion Raymond Floyd’s work at <u><a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/arrowhead-country-club">Arrowhead Country Club </a></u>sometimes gets overlooked, but the 27-hole facility &#8211; home to the Cypress, Lakes and Waterway nines &#8211; is a must-play. The default answer when looking for the property’s most memorable challenge is one of Arrowhead’s holes along the water, but if there is a long hitter in your group, No. 4 on the Cypress nine <em>(top photo)</em> gets our vote. The dogleg right par 4 plays 339 yards (all distances from white tees), but the daring among us can challenge the water and attempt to drive the green. A 240-yard tee shot is long enough to find dry land but you have to thread the needle to avoid the water. It’s an exhilarating shot.&nbsp;</p>

<p>– The hole that leaves everyone talking at <u><a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/blackmoor-golf-club">Blackmoor</a></u>, a Player design, is the par 4 No. 8. Played conventionally, it’s a 90-degree dogleg right that is 347 yards, but the “Black Knight” cut a 30-yard chute through what was otherwise a pine forest, tempting everyone to try and drive the green. The gap is narrow but the 270-yard path to the putting surface is clear, as long as you hit the ball straight. This is a gamble worth taking and it’s the hole everyone will talk about after the round. <em>(Blackmoor 8th hole pictured right)</em></p>

<p>– The sweet-swinging Couples designed Carolina National, a 27-hole property that is home to the Heron, Egret and Ibis nines. Located in Bolivia, N.C., Carolina National is overlooked by golfers who don’t want to make the drive, but that’s not a reflection on the quality of the layout. Carolina National’s most memorable hole is the par 3 No. 5 on the Heron, which features a green that is almost completely surrounded by the marshy waters of the Lockwood Folly River, delivering beauty and challenge.&nbsp;</p>
