<p>Back when I first started reviewing courses in the Myrtle Beach area over a decade ago, I tended to lock in on what I knew.</p>

<p>I too often ignored what wasn’t obvious.</p>

<p>That’s no longer the case, and the South Strand’s bevy of eye candy means you just have to keep your eyes peeled a little longer. From Murrells Inlet to the southernmost tip of Pawleys Island, several holes of the  <a href="https://www.mbn.com/special/waccamaw-golf-trail-package">Hammock Coast Golf Trail</a> have earned every bit of respect I can possibly offer.</p>

<p>These six underrated ones are a great place to start.</p>

<p><strong><a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/blackmoor-golf-club">BLACKMOOR GOLF CLUB</a>, NO. 11</strong><br>The slope from right to left on this 318-yard Par 4 isn’t so much subtle as it is chopped into a pair of significant drop offs caused by the elevation changes. Most noticeable is the huge mounds that run up the entirety of the right side &#8211; you’ll very much feel them riding the car in the path. That part is beneficial. What’s happening on the left is not. A significant drop off the fairway on that side sucks plenty of tee shots down into a no-man’s land virtually guaranteed to prevent par.</p>

<p><strong><a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/caledonia-golf-and-fish-club">CALEDONIA GOLF &amp; FISH CLUB</a>, NO. 10</strong><br>Had it been for one small change in the design process, the back-nine opener would have been much more forgettable. As it stands, Mike Strantz elected to position the green up the right side clear of the fairway instead of dead center. It added some 40 yards of distance, but more importantly, it changed the waste bunker up the right-hand side from an ancillary visual element to one that crafts every decision you need to make on the 200 yards of this Par 5, 518-yarder.</p>

<p><strong><a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/pawleys-plantation">PAWLEYS PLANTATION GOLF &amp; COUNTRY CLUB</a>, NO. 17</strong><br>Thanks to the Shortest Par 5 on the Grand Strand (AKA, Pawleys Plantation’s Par 3, 89-yard 13th), the beauty and design of the back nine’s other Par 3 often gets overlooked. Albeit not as short as No. 13, No. 17 chimes in at just 139 yards from the whites. And like its predecessor, it also has a hefty forced carry via the overflow marsh land between the tees and landing area. There’s no way to avoid the carry, and the backstop tree line helps frame it all perfectly.</p>

<p><strong><a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/tournament-player-club">TPC MYRTLE BEACH</a>, NO. 10</strong><br>The peninsula green is a perfect crescendo to Tom Fazio’s nifty layout here. The mild zig-zagging from the landing area tracking left and then back right to the green means this 322-yard Par 4 can actually be played with two straight away shots without so much as putting a full swing into action. There simply is no reason to club up here. The distance by itself is anything but prohibitive, as long as you don’t mind flirting with a bit of water on your second shot. This is a great birdie opportunity surrounded by the course’s three primary colors.</p>

<p><strong><a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/tradition-golf-club">TRADITION GOLF CLUB</a>, NO. 3</strong><br>One of Tradition’s best-designed holes comes so early in the round that most players don’t have time to digest how creative it is. The Par 4, 300-yard third hole gives you plenty of room off the tee, courtesy of a wide fairway. But the trick is to attack it with something other than driver unless you’re just going for broke. That part’s not feasible for most because of an off-set green positioned atop a gradual incline. All of it is packaged between an enclosed tree line in the shape of a V.</p>

<p><strong><a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/willbrook-plantation">WILLBROOK PLANTATION</a>, NO. 12</strong><br>While most of the area’s Par 3 are going to play sub-170 yards from the standard tees, Willbrook stretched out this one just enough to let you feel the difference. Standing on the tee box, you’re greeted by a Y-shaped waste bunker that’s only in play if one hand slips off the club. No, the sand that’s a bigger play here is the bunker off the right side of the green and a much smaller one that sits off the back side. Many players will get to know one or the other. Those who don’t might just be tap dancing on a sweet dance floor. <em>(Willbrook 12th top photo)</em></p>
