<p>If you’re looking at a map of our state of fewer than six million people, the assumption is probably that everything is a chip shot away from everywhere else.</p>

<p>And even more folks learn that Myrtle Beach proper’s real population is less than 42,000, the feeling is magnified. Real life doesn’t always match numbers.</p>

<p>For starters, Horry County is one of the largest counties in the U.S. east of the Mississippi River. And we don’t have the joy of interstate highways. And the Grand Strand has a joint personality, coupled with Georgetown to the south.</p>

<p>The point of all that is to let would-be first-timers know that navigating rounds in the place we call home requires a bit of forethought. Booking an early tee time on the South Strand when you’re staying along the North end? You better budget for some significant time in the car, and unless you’ve budgeted half your trip on ride shares, that’s probably not an option, either.</p>

<p>Thankfully, this is again where we come in to the conversation.</p>

<p>We’re going to break down all three zones of the primary north-south corridor, from North Myrtle Beach/Little River down to Pawleys Island on the south. Chances are, you’ve already heard of the courses each pocket has, but you need to keep going before booking.</p>

<p><strong>CENTRAL STRAND</strong><br>We’re starting with the middle ground because it’s a natural landing spot for visitors who start with their lodging first. We get it; the Myrtle Beach name doesn’t always actually mean Myrtle Beach, but booking engines often start there.</p>

<p>If you’re staying centrally at one of the newer hotels or possibly an AirBnB on the water or maybe even one of the area’s RV parks, you give yourself two flexibility options.</p>

<p>For starters, there are courses in (or near) city limits that have cut their teeth for decades. <a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/pine-lakes-country-club">Pine Lakes Country Club</a> <em>(pictured right)</em>, <a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/the-dunes-golf-and-beach-club">Dunes Club</a> and <a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/grande-dunes">Grande Dunes Resort Club</a> are probably the most famous. But tack on the likes of Myrtlewood Golf Club’s <a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/myrtlewood-golf-club-palmetto">Palmetto</a> and <a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/myrtlewood-golf-club-pinehills">PineHills</a> courses <em>(top photo)</em>, Whispering Pines (across the street from Myrtle Beach International Airport, mind you) or even <a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/arrowhead-country-club">Arrowhead Country Club</a> or <a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/world-tour-golf-links">World Tour Golf Links</a> on the other side of the Intracoastal Waterway, and there’s no shorts of available tee times in places with Myrtle Beach addresses.</p>

<p>The second advantage is that should you book a round north or south, it’s a 15-30 minute drive to nearly all of them, save for a few exceptions. That’s more manageable, especially if it’s a one-off complementary round.</p>

<p><strong>NORTH STRAND</strong><br>The attraction to the North Strand for golfers started to increase 15 or so years ago as temporary housing options and entertainment choices expanded out to levels comparable to Myrtle Beach city limits. North Myrtle Beach, Little River and Cherry Grove have spent resources galore to beef up their own tourist traffic.</p>
</div>

<p>The courses, in many ways, were huge beneficiaries. Properties like <a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/tidewater-golf-club-plantation">Tidewater Golf Club</a> <em>(pictured right)</em>, <a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/river-hills-golf-club">River Hills Golf and Country Club</a>, <a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/long-bay-golf-club">Long Bay Golf Club</a> were all in full swing by 1990, long before the North Strand was considered much more than a sleep beachfront town.</p>
</div>

<p>After some major revitalizations, the <a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/dye-at-barefoot-resort">Barefoot Resort</a> then added a massive boost to the market by adding four top-end courses that opened in 2000.</p>
</div>

<p>Why is that latter date important? Because two years after Barefoot opened, so too did the first phase of S.C. Highway 31. The initial phase connected the north end down to U.S. 501, phase two extended it down to S.C. 544 in 2005 and then phase three pushed it even more south, down to S.C. 707. Doing 70 mph for 28 miles makes traversing the north-south distance a bit easier, but again, barring a one-off round, we would recommend it for daily travel unless you want to spend an hour minimum in the car. <p><strong>SOUTH STRAND</strong><br>Even from the southern tip of S.C. 31, Pawleys Island’s courses are still anywhere from another 7-20 miles away. On regular roads. With red lights. And traffic.</p>

<p>It’s why Pawleys has long since been considered a proverbial island, not simply a name sake for the barrier one that drove the name selection. It’s more of a destination location, designed to a place where people rent beach houses or at one of the non-hotel complexes and stay there until it’s time to head home.</p>
</div>

<p>It’s why <a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/pawleys-plantation">Pawleys Plantation</a>, <a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/river-club">River Club</a>, <a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/true-blue">True Blue</a> and <a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/caledonia-golf-and-fish-club">Caledonia</a> often aren’t dealing with the walk-up foot traffic seen elsewhere along the Strand. Even the most reachable portions of the <a href="https://www.mbn.com/special/waccamaw-golf-trail-package">Hammock Coast Golf Trail</a> &#8211; <a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/tournament-player-club">TPC of Myrtle Beach</a> <em>(pictured right)</em> and <a href="https://www.mbn.com/course/blackmoor-golf-club">Blackmoor Golf Club</a> &#8211; have only recently become more accessible via expansion to 31 and 707.</p>
</div>

<p>From September through March, no, getting there isn’t going to be an issue. However, you do need to pay heed to your plans and dates. Your mobility won’t happen in a vacuum. For every golfer coming here, there are 10 people who are hear for other reasons.</p>

<p>Both sides want to enjoy their vacation, and we’ve got decades of proof of folks who co-exist without problems. However, if all of your courses are in Pawleys we’d highly recommend staying in Pawleys.</p>
