<p>As we run up to the 2023 PGA Championship in Rochester, N.Y., we’re reminded of how many ties to the event we have here along South Carolina’s Grand Strand.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In total, six courses here were designed by PGA Championship winners.</p>
</div>

<div class="non-component-container" data-block_name="core/paragraph" data-content_length="216">
<p>And in many ways, they are very much considered the standard bearers of the area’s golf scene. What’s more, any of the six courses have the type of post-round digs to watch the major’s afternoon holes.</p>

<p>Either way, our ties to the PGA Championship are abundant, and we love every one of them.</p>

<p><strong>Davis Love III (1997)</strong><br>Not even three years after Love’s only major victory, Barefoot Resort &amp; Golf unveiled its <u><a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/love-at-barefoot-resort">Love Course</a></u> as part of the four-track complex. It was in many ways an ode to one of the most dominant golf performances in modern history. Love won the 1997 PGA Championship by five strokes, and only two players were within shouting distance of him.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Larry Nelson (1987, 1981)</strong><br>On April 1, 1993, Larry Nelson and Jeff Brauer’s joint effort at <u><a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/wild-wing-plantation-avocet">Wild Wing</a></u> was part of a mega-complex that opened with four full courses to its property. Times changed, and it was eventually scaled back to the Avocet 18 (plus the Hummingbird 9). What remains to this day is one of the area’s cleanest straight-line designs. <em>(Wild Wing Avocet Course 18th top photo)</em></p>

<p><strong>Raymond Floyd (1982, 1969)</strong><br>Quickly approaching its 30th anniversary, <u><a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/arrowhead-country-club">Arrowhead Country Club</a></u> opened it doors just 13 years after Floyd picked up his second PGA Championship win. Along with Tom Jackson, Floyd built a 27-hole track (split between the Lakes, Waterway and Cypress nines) that has remained one of the best-kept secrets in Myrtle Beach golf. <em>(Arrowhead Country Club pictured right)</em></p>

<p><strong>Jack Nicklaus (1980, 1975, 1973, 1971, 1963)</strong><br>Nicklaus dropped not one, but two, high-end layouts in Myrtle Beach in 1988. The five-time PGA Championship victory was initially hired to design <u><a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/pawleys-plantation">Pawleys Plantation Golf &amp; Country Club</a></u> before quickly adding a second in <u><a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/long-bay-golf-club">Long Bay Golf Club</a></u> in Longs. Both courses feature Nicklaus’ firmly held belief that this game shouldn’t be a cake walk.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Lanny Wadkins (1977)</strong><br>While Tom Fazio is frequently credited with laying out <u><a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/tournament-player-club">TPC of Myrtle Beach</a></u>, 1977 PGA Championship winner Lanny Wadkins was heavily involved in the project as a consultant. The course itself hosted the PGA Senior Championship event not long after opening in 1999, and it has remained true to itself in terms of difficulty to this day.</p>

<p><strong>Gary Player (1972, 1962)</strong><br>Maybe no course in the area took on as much of its designer’s identity than <u><a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/blackmoor-golf-club">Blackmoor Golf Club</a></u>. The Gary Player Signature Design dips and dives around an undulated surface in many ways crafted by its proximity to the Waccamaw River in Murrells Inlet. Between that and Player’s design, expect to use every club in your bag. <em>(Blackmoor Golf Club pictured right)</em></p>
