<p>Unless you’ve played here a lot, you’re going to be lulled into a false sense of confidence on a short hole with only one real noticeable trouble spot. It’s the ones you don’t see that bite. The newly renovated and reconfigured bunker front right is going to draw your eye, sure. And while avoiding it is good for business, you can’t avoid it by too much. A roll off the back of the green is entirely possible, and ending up back there puts bogey in play immediately.</p>

<p>We’ve played here enough to watch our share of playing partners really muscle up and then pay the penalty. The distance alone is one reason. The semi-forced carry over the pond for some tee boxes into a green protected by bunkers on three sides is another. What it often leads to is golf balls sailing over the back side of the green (which is pretty good sized already) and into a no man’s land of thicker grass that can be a huge problem all its own.</p>

<p>Even pictures of this place during the thickest portion of the tree growth during the year don’t accurately depict this hourglass short hole. The chute-like path your ball must traverse from tee to green is magnified by the hideously large bunker trying to box out the green. It comes into play more than we’d like to admit due to the distance of this hole. It’s 186 from the whites and stretches to 227 yards from the tips.</p>

<p>While not overbearing in terms of distance &#8211; players who’ve been here before know that’s not what Nicklaus had in mind with his Par 3s &#8211; the angled tee box has you facing water that you have no choice but to carry to reach the green in one. That’s no gimme between the pond, an elongated bunkers just on the other side of that and another smaller swatch of sand beyond the putting surface.</p>

<p>Longtime repeat players have seen this hole change in dramatic fashion over the years. The expansion of SC 707 forced it to be reduced from Par 4 status to a Par 3. What’s more, it took the owners some time to finally get the grand plan for it plotted out. What remains is a mounded final few yards, and &#8211; thanks to recent work &#8211; a huge bunker to the right of the green. It’s a beautiful short hole, but the new-age look has it playing as difficult as ever.</p>

<p>About the only saving grace with this one is that the green is massive. It helps prevent many a player from finding the pond that covers the front, right and back edge of the green, as well as the smaller bunker front-facing it. However, reaching the putting surface in one is no guarantee of a realistic birdie putt. This is the No. 3 handicap at Burning Ridge, after all. The 200 yards is what most will tee off from, and it’s not comfortable if there’s any wind whatsoever. <em>(Burning Ridge 12th top photo)</em></p>
