MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. | So many of the best parts of golf translate to non-golfing activities. Stretching your legs. Exploration. Breaking down the terrain. Nature. The great outdoors. They all apply to the links-minded folks who can also stand a good hike. All around South Carolina’s Grand Strand, hiking trails provide the same type of visuals and self-satisfaction many of us are hoping to get when we book a tee time.
And best yet, they’re a fraction of the cost.
Instead of putting the bag back in your trunk and heading straight home, we’ve crafted a way to double up and make a full day of at four local courses and a nearby park, trail or gardens. We promise &#8211; the air in your lungs will never have felt so clean.
CENTRAL STRAND
The <a href="https://www.sctrails.net/trails/trail/horry-county-bike-run-park-the-hulk" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Horry County Bike &amp; Run Park</a>  has a Marvel-themed nickname for a reason. “The Hulk”, (top photo) as those of us locals call it, is built to test bikers and trail runners alike. However, you can scale it back, basically the same way you would a golf course; ff you aren’t playing the tips, a course itself is almost much more manageable. That’s certainly the case at <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/grande-dunes">Grande Dunes Resort Course</a>, the Roger Rulewich Group layout that is a beast from the back tees but super enjoyable from the whites.
LOCAL’S TIP: If you know you’ve only got a mile or two walk in you, be mindful of how far you’ve gotten from your car. There is a “turn” at the Hulk, but if you’re not careful you’ll end up playing the proverbial 18 &#8211; in this case, that’s a seven-mile haul.
NORTH STRAND
There aren’t many points in Horry County where you can see a dolphin, pivot your head 90 degrees and take in one of the more scenic finishing combos in all of Myrtle Beach golf. Little River’s <a href="http://ctrails.net/trails/trail/vereen-memorial-gardens" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Vereen Gardens </a>is a 30-second drive from the entrance to Glen Dornoch, so not much of a surprise that they share a property line. From the eastern portion of the gardens, which lead you right up to the Intracoastal Waterway, you can spot the aforementioned sea life, not to mention a clear shot of the bunker complex on the 17th hole at <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/glen-dornoch-golf-club">Glen Dornoch</a>. Only marsh territory separates the two.
LOCAL’S TIP: Vereen Gardens is free, with only a donation drop box located next to the primary parking lot. Think of it as a bag drop tip.

Although <a href="https://southcarolinaparks.com/huntington-beach" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Huntington Beach State Park</a> is more known for its famed Atalaya Castle, the trails on the north end of the property are every bit the hiker’s paradise. They’ll take you to the edge of inlet water where several varieties of birds nest and feed, over some rugged terrain not for the faint of heart and then back to civilization again. It’s a perfect way to add some steps after a relatively lighter day at <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/litchfield-country-club">Litchfield Country Club</a>. The relatively short track (not to mention the help of a cart) isn’t going to be the most taxing round of your life. (pirctured right)
LOCAL’S TIP: For the true outdoor warriors, consider booking a campsite at Huntington Beach during your stay. It’s tough to beat sleeping with the waves of the Atlantic crashing in the distance.
INLAND
The <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/quail-creek">General James Hackler Golf Course at Coastal Carolina</a> has a hole lining one of the busiest stretches of road in the area. However, that spot next to 544 is an anomaly. The rest of the round at Hackler is relatively quiet. If that’s not enough, head a couple blocks over to the <a href="https://www.sctrails.net/trails/trail/cox-ferry-lake-recreation-area" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Cox Ferry Lake Recreation Area</a> of the Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge. The western-most section of the property is dominated by trails that weave through thick forests, long wooden bridges and a massive swamp and its accompanying marsh.
LOCAL’S TIP: While it’s pretty difficult to get lost on Cox Ferry’s well-marked trails, it’s a good idea to know where you’re going in advance. Snap a quick picture of the trail map at the first parking lot and keep it handy.
