<p>If beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so, too, is length. Up and down South Carolina’s Grand Strand golfing mecca, five holes stand out to us for not only their distance from tee to green, but also how that length is incorporated into the design and overall feel of the course.</p>

<p>Placement, hazards, elevation changes.</p>

<p>It all matters. And it all must be considered. Muscling up on these won’t hurt &#8211; they’re all north of 500 yards &#8211; but that’s only part of what players must work around on these five beasts of the beach.</p>

<p><strong><u><a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/the-legends-heathland">LEGENDS GOLF &amp; RESORT HEATHLAND COURSE</a></u></strong>, NO. 13<br>Very few of us are going to even attempt to reach the green in two on this 507-yarder, even with a nicely placed tee shot up the left side of the fairway. There is next to no room to miss on the tee shot, as a thick grass area frames the left and a stream does the same on the right (before cutting across). At the same time, you have to get enough distance to prevent the necessary lay-up in front of that water.</p>

<p><strong><u><a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/myrtle-beach-national-southcreek">MYRTLE BEACH NATIONAL SOUTHCREEK COURSE</a></u></strong>, NO. 10<br>SouthCreek is thought of as a generous course for seniors and women, thanks to the bulk of its par 4s and par 5s keeping distance to a minimum. Now take into account that the first hole of the back nine is 503 yards &#8211; from the senior tees &#8211; and you can see why this is a bit of an anomaly. The average player is going to feel all 525 yards from the white tees here, as a dogleg right bends around a lengthy pond and a waste bunker that serves a catch-all for errant shots.<em>(pictured right)</em></p>

<p><strong><u><a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/river-hills-golf-club">RIVER HILLS GOLF &amp; COUNTRY CLUB</a></u></strong>, NO. 11<br>The longest hole at River Hills is also the only one on the entire course where those teeing off from the whites are staring at more than 500 yards (548, to be exact). Even the greens here measure a stout 512. If that wasn’t enough, this stick of a hole has one of River Hills’ narrowest fairways, at one point measuring fewer than 30 yards across thanks to a stream that meanders its way from the side of the tees right up to the back side of the green. <em>(top photo)</em></p>

<p><strong><u><a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/shaftesbury-glen">SHAFTESBURY GLEN GOLF &amp; FISH CLUB</a></u></strong>, NO. 2<br>Ah, Shaftesbury, where you have a straight, short and relatively easy opening hole to get your flow. Got it? Good. Because your acclimation period is over. Clyde Johnston elected to put his longest single entity up next. The 522-yard Par 5 at No. 2 is forgiving only in the sense that players who can keep their ball straight aren’t going to find any other trouble. The fish-hook shaped waste bunker frames the fairway but doesn’t really come into play for many. But the distance alone is impressive enough.</p>

<p><strong><u><a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/wild-wing-plantation-avocet">WILD WING PLANTATION AVOCET COURSE </a></u></strong>NO. 4<br>Like Shaftesbury’s mention here, Wild Wing’s doesn’t exactly wait around to see if you ate your Wheaties (and by that, we also mean hit up the range). The 501-yard hole from the whites stretches to 551 from the tips. Paired with that sheer length is the steady uphill climb you’re going to be making. After you tee off, make sure that you add a club length, as some wind in your face can be typical, too.</p>
