MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. | Even if you’re an avid Tour watcher, chances are you are seeing things that you’ll never be able to do.
The big sweeping drives around tree lines, perfect sand escapes, flawless green dimension execution. What you’re not hearing are those announcers use terms that apply to your game. Maybe you stink or simply have a propensity for more rough rounds than you’d care to admit. Either way, your game lends itself to a different vocabulary &#8211; and we’re not just talking about the four-letter variety. Your play alone may not be improving fast enough, but that doesn’t mean your terminology can’t. This golf vocab is great to know, if for no other reason than laughing at yourself is the key to happiness.
Let’s have some fun &#8211; and maybe try to enact a bit of reverse psychology along the way.
AIRMAIL: When your ball’s flight path is well beyond it’s intended target
Did you load up on protein that morning? Get a great night of sleep? Pick up the 6-iron when you meant to snag the 9? Any of these are great excuses for watching your ball fly a green by 20-something yards.
Grand Strand location to learn this term &#8211; <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/pawleys-plantation">Pawleys Plantation Golf &amp; Country Club</a>: The Shortest Par 5 on the Grand Strand, aka No. 13 here (pictured above), is a tiny hole that plays under 100 yards for most. Its peninsula green is surrounded on three sides by marsh. Everyone who has played this course more than once has sailed one here.
THE BEACH: Sand traps, waste bunkers, pot bunkers
The 1990s Adam Sandler flick “Happy Gilmore” put this one into the forefront for another generation when Shooter McGavin told the crowd at the Waterbury Open that his playing partner “Spends more time on the beach than David Hasselhoff.”

But it’s also next to impossible if you’re not swinging it right that day.

Remember playing kick ball as a kid and you’d ask the pitcher for one slow and baby-bouncy? Yeah, you weren’t supposed to roll that into your golf game. Hacking a fat shot is among the more embarrassing moves on the course, and it is especially frustrating as it tends to happen when you only barely miss your contact point on the ball.

Tradition (pictured right) itself isn’t the hardest track around, but those distractions are just enough to get you to chunk a shot off the tee or fairway.
DUCK HOOK: A mishit tee shot that snap right to left into trouble
Late in the round, arms starting to feel like jelly, a difficult-looking tee shot awaiting. Snap, quack, splash/thud. We’ve all been there, and if we’re cognizant enough to our bodies, we don’t even attempt a mulligan and elect for a drop up the way.

Shaping the tee shot over the pond into a doglegged fairway means a whole bunch of people try to do too much. And then donate their ball.
LUMBERJACK: Golfer who continually makes contact with the trees
Surely, this came out of the days when more golfers were donning plaid on a regular basis. The outfits have changed, but we’ve all seen or been that person who can’t hit a drive straight and gets real good at listening for the clunk. Do it twice on the same hole, and your buddies will never let you live it down for the rest of your days.

Few of them cluster those towering pines quite like Aberdeen. It means that one thud can become two or three if you’re not careful.

You start your day with one of these, and it could turn into a long morning or afternoon. Dropping an eight onto the card is rough, and it almost assuredly means that you’re going to struggle to stay in the double digits overall. It is, however, a little more understandable on a Par 5 than a 130-yard Par 3.

Many a player here have needed multiple drops on one hole. Hence, a lot of eights.
