MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. | We’ve all been at a point where some of the bells and whistles aren’t the most important part of a round. Whether we just want a care-free day on the links or have something higher up the ladder lined up later and want to take a few whacks first, there are times when a more economic round makes more sense. This is where the market forces of South Carolina’s northern coastline and its 90 or so courses keep money in your pocket. The tracks even those of us in and around Myrtle Beach consider to be budget-friendly could be charging double or triple in other parts of the country. Saving some bank, then, is your reward for choosing the following five tracks, regardless of season.
 
ABERDEEN COUNTRY CLUB
Thirty years back when <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/aberdeen-country-club">Aberdeen</a> first opened its tee sheets, golf along the northern corridor of South Carolina’s Grand Strand was still relatively sparse. Nearby <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/long-bay-golf-club">Long Bay Club</a> opened the year prior in 1988 under the banner of Jack Nicklaus’ design lore. Just up the street, Tom Jackson’s 27-hole layout was ready to do the same under his. In the time since, it’s overcome several major floods from nearby Bucks Creek and continue to survive. There’s only one reason: Players love what available for the low price tag.
 
COLONIAL CHARTERS GOLF CLUB
Considered one of the best options in the area for a warm-up round, <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/colonial-charters-golf-club1">Colonial Charters</a> has had some significant changes during its time as an operational course. Originally opened in 1998, the first of its name lasted seven years before a brief closing and subsequent reopening under a new moniker. In 2013, it reverted back to <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/colonial-charters-golf-club1">Colonial Charters</a> and started what could be deemed its best run yet. It’s all added up to some fantastic putting surfaces and a creative design capable of a quality round.

On-site sister course <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/myrtle-beach-national-kings-north">King’s North</a> is one of the finest courses there is to offer in all of Myrtle Beach. The ownership past and present would have been silly to attach <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/myrtle-beach-national-southcreek">SouthCreek</a> (or the <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/myrtle-beach-national-west-course">West Course</a>) to it without committing the same resources to keeping it well above the industry norm. With <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/myrtle-beach-national-southcreek">SouthCreek</a> &#8211; another Arnold Palmer design &#8211; players can expect pristine conditions on a shot-makers course tailor-made for attracting plenty of attention all its own.
 
RIVER OAKS GOLF PLANTATION
Those driving in and out of Myrtle Beach have likely snuck a peak at a small portion of <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/river-oaks">River Oaks</a>’ Fox Nine just before or after passing the Intracoastal Waterway on U.S. 501. There, adjacent to the long-unused (and drawn) blue train bridge, passersby notice a pair of wide-open holes with little obstruction. The rest of the course here is fairly similar, with Tom Jackson and Gene Hamm teaming up to construct plenty of praise-worthy holes.
 
WIZARD GOLF CLUB
Outside visitors usually have to do a bit of looking around to find their way onto <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/the-wizard-golf">Wizard</a>, but it’s well worth the effort, given not only the price but what you get for it. Part of the Mystical Trio (that also includes The <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/the-witch-golf">Witch Golf Club</a> and <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/man-o-war">Man O’ War Golf Club</a>), <a href="https://www.mbn.com/courses/the-wizard-golf">Wizard’s</a> property is a spectacle all in itself, the Scottish-style clubhouse serving as the centerpiece of Dan Maples’ bunker-heavy, native-grass riddled design doing the rest of the talking.
